Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What bridge takes its name from the city itself?

Answer: London Bridge

Until 1750 the site on which this bridge stands was the only crossing between the two banks of the Thames. It has been replaced many times. In Elizabethan times the then bridge slowed the flow of the river allowing ice to sometimes form on its surface, which enabled "Frost Fairs" to be held on the frozen river.
2. William Wordsworth wrote a famous poem about the view seen from which London bridge?

Answer: Westminster Bridge

The poem was written in 1802, and it is said the poet wrote it from the top of a coach while on his way to France. The poem is entitled
'Upon Westminster Bridge'.
3. Of all the bridges to cross the Thames only one is a bascule bridge. Which is it?

Answer: Tower Bridge

After taking ten years to complete, Tower Bridge was finally finished in 1894. It was designed in a gothic style, which as well as being fashionable at the time, was thought would help it blend in with the Tower of London nearby. Being a bascule bridge it can open, it had to do this originally to let the tall ships through.
4. Which bridge was opened in 1934 by the then Canadian Prime Minister Mr McKenzie King?

Answer: Chelsea Bridge

The bridge replaced an earlier one which had stood in the same spot and linked Chelsea with Battersea. The bridge is a 350 foot suspension bridge and is another of the bridges which look beautiful when lit at night.
5. On its opening what bridge was nicknamed 'the wobbly bridge'?

Answer: The Millennium Bridge

This pedestrian only bridge was intended to be 'a blade of light across the river' according to its designer Lord Foster. Its design was unique in being the worlds first horizonal suspension bridge. However when it was tested by people crossing over it they discovered it had a slight wobble which gave some a distinct feeling of nausea.

The problem was fixed and now it ranks among one of the most beautiful bridges when lit at night.
6. Which bridge is the furthest east?

Answer: The Queen Elizabeth ll Bridge

The Queen Elizabeth II Bridge, or as it is sometimes called the QE2 Bridge, was opened by The Queen and Prince Phillip in 1991.
7. The song 'Misty Morning, Albert Bridge' was recorded by which group?

Answer: The Pogues

Albert Bridge is a suspension bridge built in 1873. Sometimes the bridge can feel a little unsteady underfoot, maybe thats why it has the notice 'all troops must break step when crossing this bridge'.
8. The annual university boat race starts at which Thames bridge?

Answer: Putney Bridge

The present Putney Bridge was built by the engineer Sir Joseph Bazalgette, who was also responsible for much of the Thames Embankment and the sewage system.
9. Which bridge was built by a workforce mainly consisting of women?

Answer: Waterloo Bridge

The present bridge was built during 1939 and 1945 when most able bodied men were away in the forces. It is clad with Portland stone which is thought to be virtually self cleaning. Sir Giles Gilbert Scott designed the bridge. He was also the designer of the red London phone box.

The previous Waterloo Bridge was opened in 1816, on the second anniversary of the Duke of Wellington's famous victory.
10. Which bridge was known as 'The Bridge of Fools' at its conception?

Answer: Westminster Bridge

The idea of the bridge was first proposed during the reign of Queen Elizabeth l, but it wasn't until 1736 that work got underway. The money for the bridge was raised through a lottery, hence the fools who bought a ticket. A new bridge was built to replace it in 1854.
