Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. When an individual realizes the road to happiness lies beyond being rich how would he tell his amigo "Not everything that shines is gold?"

Answer: No todo lo que brilla es oro

When my grandma was a baby, she lost her sight. My tar tar abuela or great grandmother promised Our Lady of Talpa (another name for Mary, mother of Jesus), who was represented at the local Our Lady of Talpa Church in Sinaloa Mexico, two golden eyes if my grandma's sight was restored. My grandma's eyesight wasn't only restored and the two golden eyes put at the Our Lady of Talpa Shrine, but my grandma was married to my grandpa in their local church, Our Lady of Talpa Church in Los Angeles.
2. How did the friendly American Spanish teacher translate to her eager new Spanish students: "Little by little you will go far?"

Answer: Poco a poco se anda lejos

Step by step would be paso por paso. The Pyramid of the Sun in Mexico has several steps, Teotihuacan -Tay-oh-tea-wah-khan- is a World Heritage Site that is thought to have been established approximately 100 BC by the Toltec, Teotihuacan was once a city the size of ancient Athens and Rome. Engineers have been amazed by the steps and construction of such a site at such an early stage in human civilization.
3. A senora tells her son that before he can go out and play with his friends he has to mow the back lawn that he has let grow a foot high. How would she say to him that "The lazy one works double"?

Answer: El perezoso trabaja doble

Carlos Slim of Mexico (and also is of Lebanese descent) has been ranked the wealthiest man in the world in 2010, 2011, and 2012. He certainly is an individual who is not lazy. Don't be lazy is "No seas flojo".
4. How does the old padre tell his nephew "When you see the devil praying, he wants to fool you?"

Answer: Cuando el diablo reza enganarte quiere

Both Mexico and Spain are primarily Catholic countries. As a result, there are several quotations that pertain to religion. However, not all of them are serious- take for example- toda la gente gritaba viva la virgen, viva la virgen! pero no viva tan lejos decia que lo iba cargando- All of the people cried out (in a religious parade) long live the virgin, long live the virgin! But I hope she doesn't live too far (said the one carrying her statue).
5. The professor said to another professor " In the world of the blind, the one-eyed person is king."

Answer: En el mundo de los ciegos, el tuerto es el rey

Believe it or not both Louis Braille and Helen Keller were blind- Louis Braille being the founder of the raised point alphabet, Helen Keller was deafblind and she was both a political activist and writer. A couple of her quotes are as follows: "Life is either a great adventure or nothing" and "The only thing worse than being blind is having sight but no vision."
6. If a veteran car salesman tells the newest rookie salesman he will do everything in his power to help him succeed, and then tells the other car salesmen what a fool the rookie is for believing him, how would the sharp rookie salesman translate "He has the words of a saint and the nails of a cat?"

Answer: Tiene palabras de santo y unas de gato

This quotation translates to a person can be nice to your face and then stab you in the back. My grandma indicated that quotes of Spanish origin are second only in number to quotations of the Chinese. The Great Chinese philosopher, Confucius has had a significant impact on The Chinese, Koreans, Japanese and other countries for over 1400 years. One of his quotes indicates the following: in business affairs it is important to be friendly but not too familiar. Perhaps even in the time of Confucius people would talk. Based on my knowledge, women would frequently meet at the rivers to do washing and exchange not only gossip but important information.
7. The reformed juvenile delinquent later in life becomes a priest- How did he tell his young adult group "With a crooked ruler God can make a straight line?"

Answer: Dios con regla torcida raya derecho

This unique old dicho indicates that God can do anything that man can't. In other words, based on this quote and my understanding of grandma's knowledge, God can and does perform miracles every day, something man can never do without God's help.
8. Subjected to peer pressure Monica was asked to smoke marijuana among a group of college friends, when she told her mom, how did her mom say in Spanish "It is better to be alone than with bad company?"

Answer: Es mejor estar solo que mal acompanado

There are many kids that choose a group to associate with that isn't of positive influence- William James had a quote- "Habit is the Flywheel of society"- If a young person gets in the habit of associating with negative influences, he or she won't necessarily develop into a productive citizen.

Therefore, this quote suggests that it is better to do in your heart what you know to be right, even if that means being alone.
9. When Tomas got excited and invited all of his Japanese friends and his classmate Miguel to come over and watch him give a 20 minute juggling performance with 3 balls while singing Japanese folk songs, what did his friend Miguel say in Spanish when he happily exclaimed "The musician, the poet, and the crazy all of us have a little!"

Answer: De musico, poeta, y loco, todos tenemos un poco

Those who create music and poetry are often free-spirited and some are quite "crazy" in the way they act, speak and or dress. However frequently associated with creativity is fun. This above dicho seems to imply that everyone has little bit of musician, poet and craziness in them which can equate to fun.
10. At his 20th high school reunion when Pedro asked his best friend in high school, the valedictorian- "What do you think of me now?" How did the former valedictorian reply in Spanish when he said "Tell me who you walk with and I'll tell you who you are?"

Answer: Dime con quien andas y te dire quien eres

Obviously, there are many individuals who choose to interact on a personal level with only one type of person, and there are others who interact with many types. Regardless, one can tell a lot about his/her friends, potential mates by assessing who his/her friends and/or potential mates associate with and respect.
