Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. After meeting her future husband (and famous Australian sportsman, Glenn McGrath), Jane Steele moved to Australia from England. Which sport did Glenn McGrath play at an international level?

Answer: Cricket

Glenn McGrath played cricket for Australia between 1993 and 2007 as a fast-medium pace bowler and was part of the success of the Australian cricket team in the mid 1990s to early 2000s. McGrath was one of the most economical fast bowlers of his time.
He met his wife-to-be, Jane, in a Hong Kong nightclub when Jane was working as a flight attendant for Virgin Atlantic Airways.
2. In 1997, Jane McGrath was diagnosed with which disease?

Answer: Breast cancer

Jane was 31 when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. After suffering through a mastectomy, chemotherapy and radiotherapy, Jane was told she was cancer-free in 1998. Jane then had 2 children and, amazingly, breast-fed both children.
3. In which year did Jane and Glenn establish the McGrath Foundation?

Answer: 2005

After being diagnosed with metastatic disease (the spread of a disease - usually cancer - from one bodily organ to another) in her bones, and first having access to a breast cancer nurse, Jane and Glenn were inspired to create a charity offering support to women suffering from breast cancer.
4. Jane's wish with the McGrath Foundation was to provide something for all Australian families dealing with breast cancer. What was it that Jane wanted to provide?

Answer: Breast care nurses

In 2003, Jane first had access to a breast cancer nurse as she was being treated for secondary cancer. This helped to develop Jane's belief that every woman diagnosed with breast cancer in Australia, and their family, should have the access to and support of a specialist breast care nurse. The foundation was re-launched in 2005 in an effort to fulfill Jane's wish.
5. Jane McGrath died in June, 2008. How old was Jane when she passed away?

Answer: 42

Brain metastasis was detected in early 2006 which led to Jane undergoing radiation treatment every three weeks. Her brain tumor was removed but in mid-June of 2008 she became severely ill and died at home on the morning of June 22, 2008. She left behind her husband, Glenn, and children James and Holly.
6. January 2009 saw cricket in Australia turn pink. As a tribute to Jane McGrath and in support of the McGrath Foundation, certain items around the Sydney Cricket Ground were pink. Which of the following were NOT pink?

Answer: The pitch

The 3 Mobile Test between Australia and South Africa in January of 2009 at the Sydney Cricket Ground was a sea of pink. Spectators were encouraged to wear pink while the proceeds from sales of pink bandanas went to the McGrath Foundation. Day 3, traditionally known as 'ladies day', has been renamed as 'Jane McGrath Day'.
7. 2009 saw the first pink V8 supercar racing team (in Australia). Which race, the biggest on the Australian calendar, was the first for Team McGrath?

Answer: Supercheap Auto Bathurst 1000

Held on the 8th-11th of October and consisting of 161 laps of the Mount Panorama raceway, Bathurst 1000 is the biggest racing meeting on the Australian V8 Supercar calendar. Team McGrath, along with the Wilson Security Racing team, have transformed the Wilson Security Racing team's cars, drivers and crew using hot pink and the McGrath Foundation logo to create Australia's first pink V8 Supercar.
8. The McGrath Foundation encourages women of all ages check their breasts regularly and become 'Breast Aware'. Upon finding changes in the breast, what is the recommended course of action?

Answer: Don't panic and see a doctor immediately

The most important thing is not to panic. Not all changes in the breast are related to breast cancer however any changes should be taken seriously and medical advice should be sought as soon as possible. A doctor will perform a breast exam to determine whether or not further testing is needed.
9. Which of the following is NOT a major role of a McGrath Breast Care Nurse?

Answer: Providing treatment to the sufferer

A McGrath Breast Care Nurse is not trained to provide treatment to the patient, this is the job of a specialist doctor, although the nurses do play an important role in liaising between patient and doctor and clarify technical and sometimes confusing information for the patient.
A McGrath Breast Care Nurse is trained to manage the care of the breast cancer patient throughout their treatment. The most important function they are trained for is to be a vital emotional support to the breast cancer sufferer and their family.
10. Which of these is NOT a way an AVERAGE person can help the McGrath Foundation?

Answer: Become an oncologist or surgeon

An AVERAGE person is able make a difference by donating either their time or money to the McGrath Foundation, making a bequest in their will, hosting a community event aimed at raising awareness for breast cancer, or making a purchase from the McGrath Foundation.
All proceeds received go into funding a McGrath Breast Care Nurse for three years. Special emphasis is put into providing these nurses in rural and regional areas of Australia. Each McGrath Breast Care Nurse comes at an approximate cost of $350,000.
