Traveling Wilburys Trivia Questions

1. The band The Traveling Wilburys was formed almost as a joke in order to make a B-side to a George Harrison single. Which one?

From Quiz
The Story of The Traveling Wilburys

Answer: This Is Love

George wanted to record a B-side to his Warner Brothers' single 'This Is Love'. His co-writer, Jeff Lynne and Roy Orbison went round to Bob Dylan's Malibu studio to record the track. George had left his guitar at Tom Petty's house, so the Traveling Wilburys (American spelling suggested by Jeff Lynne as the Americans outnumbered the Brits) were born. The resulting track, 'Handle With Care' was considered far too good to be a B-side filler, so was released as a single, getting to number 21 in the UK singles and number 2 in the US Rock charts. They recorded their first album in a mere 10 days in May 1988. The wrong answers are all George Harrison singles.

2. What is the first line we hear being sung in 'Volume 1?'

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys Lyrics

Answer: Been beat up and battered around

George singing the verses of the great first single off 'Volume 1': 'Handle with Care.'

3. Which Wilbury song was supposed to be the B-side to George Harrison's "Cloud Nine" single "Got My Mind Set On You"?

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys

Answer: Handle With Care

George Harrison, Bob Dylan, Tom Petty, Jeff Lynne, and Roy Orbison, all contributed verses to "Handle With Care" which was to be the B-side. The record company rejected it as a B-side because they felt that the song was "too good to throw away," and thus the first steps to "Volume 1" began. "That's What It Takes" and "Zig Zag" took the place as the B-side, depending on what country released the single.

4. What was the Traveling Wilburys second album called?

From Quiz The Story of The Traveling Wilburys

Answer: Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3

'Traveling Wilburys Vol.1' was followed by 'Traveling Wilburys Vol. 3' in 1980. The reason for this was given as "George being George". I made up all the wrong answers. In 2007 a box set, 'The Traveling Wilburys Collection', containing both albums and a DVD, was released. It went straight to number one in the UK, and also charted at number 9 in the US Billboard 200.

5. Who's lead singer on 'Rattled?'

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys Lyrics

Answer: Jeff Lynne

George, Roy, and Tom chime in for the "twisted, shaken," and "rattled" in the chorus.

6. What comes directly after these lyrics in 'Last Night?': "I asked her to marry me -"

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys Lyrics

Answer: She smiled and pulled out a knife

Part of the bridge as sung by Roy.

7. In 1990, an album was released for the Romanian Angel Appeal, to benefit orphans of that country. What single, also the name of the album, did The Traveling Wilburys record for it?

From Quiz The Story of The Traveling Wilburys

Answer: Nobody's Child

All the named tracks come from the album. 'With a Little Help from my Friends' (also released as a single) was recorded by another former Beatle, Ringo Starr, and his 'All-Starr Band' (consisting of Ringo, Joe Walsh, Nils Lofgren, Billy Preston, Dr. John, Levon Helm, Rick Danko, Garth Hudson, Jim Keltner, Clarence Clemons and Ringo's son Zak Starkey). 'Homeward Bound' was George Harrison (again!) and Paul Simon and 'Medicine Man' was Elton John.

8. Which two songs make references to guitar maintenance because of the titles?

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys

Answer: "Cool Dry Place" and "Handle With Care"

To keep your guitar in shape you need to handle it with care and store it in a cool dry place so that moisture doesn't get to it.

9. As part of the joke, The Traveling Wilburys all assumed identities as the fictitious sons of the equally fictitious Charles Truscott Wilbury, Sr. Which artist was Lucky Wilbury on the first album and Boo Wilbury on the second?

From Quiz The Story of The Traveling Wilburys

Answer: Bob Dylan

Tom Petty was Charlie T. Wilbury Jr. on the first album and Muddy Wilbury on the second, George Harrison was Nelson Wilbury and Spike Wilbury and Jeff Lynne was Otis Wilbury and Clayton Wilbury.

10. Which song contains the lyrics "Put your teeth in a glass?"

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys Lyrics

Answer: Wilbury Twist

"Ain't ever been nothin' quite like this - It's a magical thing called The Wilbury Twist" George goes on to sing after that.

11. Which music video was a tribute to Roy's death?

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys

Answer: End Of The Line

"End of the Line" takes place on a train. The four surviving Wilburys take turns singing their parts and when Roy's turn comes up (after Tom sings "maybe somewhere when somebody plays Purple Haze") the train enters a tunnel and the lights dim. If you remember the video, next to Tom is a picture frame with Roy's photo in it, possibly from a photo shoot for his "Mystery Girl" album and a rocking chair with his guitar is between Jeff and Bob.

13. What name was first suggested for The Traveling Wilburys?

From Quiz The Story of The Traveling Wilburys

15. Who is the only surviving Wilbury (and still touring) that has incorporated "Handle With Care" into his play list?

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys

It was also one of two songs that he, Jeff Lynne, and Dhani played for George's Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction as a solo artist. Tom Petty died in 2017.

18. Which rock guitarist played lead guitar on the track 'She's My Baby' from The Traveling Wilburys' second album?

From Quiz The Story of The Traveling Wilburys

Answer: Gary Moore

Although all the wrong answers would no doubt have done a great job, the selected one was Gary Moore. Interestingly, Eric Clapton and George Harrison were both married to the same woman, Pattie Boyd.

19. Which Traveling Wilburys' song shares its title with an alcoholic drink?

From Quiz Traveling Wilburys Lyrics

Answer: Margarita
