Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What do the astronauts promise the "Fire Maidens from Outer Space" (1956) as they depart their moon to return to Earth?

Answer: a spaceship full of husbands

Hestia, played by Susan Shaw, is elected Queen of Atlantis. She then departs with the mission commander, Luther Blair, played by Anthony Dexter, with whom she has fallen in love. Blair promises that the Earth will send another rocket filled with handsome young men in order to perpetuate the race of the Atlanteans.
2. Three of these titles are genuine, bona fide, for-real, professionally-produced and theatrically-released motion pictures from the 1950s. Which one is *NOT*?

Answer: Zombies Conquer the Earth

"From the Earth to the Moon" (1958) stars Joseph Cotten, George Sanders, and Debra Paget. "Journey to the Center of the Earth" (1959) stars James Mason, Pat Boone, and Arlene Dahl. "Not of This Earth" (1957) is a Roger Corman film starring Paul Birch, Beverly Garland, and Morgan Jones.

There does not appear to have ever been a science-fiction or horror film titled "Zombies Conquer the Earth".
3. How is the monster finally killed in "Varan the Unbelievable" (1958)?

Answer: He swallows mega-explosives.

Varan seems immune to most explosives, even a new one developed for use in dam building. As the monster approaches Haneda Airport, the military notices that it devours flares shot in its direction. The Japanese Defense Force attaches the new explosives to flares. Varan consumes them and, when they detonate, he is killed from the inside out.
4. Probably better known for playing private detective Joe Mannix on television's "Mannix" (1967-1975), who played Tony Lamont in "Day the World Ended" (1955)?

Answer: Mike Connors

Armenian-American actor Mike Connors was credited as Touch Connors in "Day the World Ended". He had been a basketball star in high school and his teammates nicknamed him "touch" for his ability to handle a basketball. His character, Tony Lamont, is a ne'er-do-well grifter and small-time crook who is abusive to women.

He seeks to dump (murder) his girlfriend, strip-tease dancer Ruby, and take up with Commander Jim Maddison's lovely daughter Louise. His bloody end in the film is much deserved.
5. In the 1956 motion picture "1984", what does the Junior Anti-Sex League promote?

Answer: artificial insemination

Within the Party, the Junior Anti-Sex League promotes celibacy and the use of artificial insemination as the sole means of reproduction. The Party's idea is to take any personal joy out of intercourse. In the film, Julia appears to be a member of this league but that is only a cover for her willingness to engage in sex with Winston.
6. What is the literary, non-motion-picture source of the movie "Devil Girl from Mars" (1954)?

Answer: a stage play

James Eastwood and John C. Maher wrote a stage play from which Eastwood wrote the script for "Devil Girl from Mars" (1954). The screenplay is obviously derived from a stage play. The action occurs within the Bonnie Charlie, a remote inn somewhere in the Scottish highlands. The practice of setting a play in a single location, such that there need be no set changes, is of long venerability in the theatre.
7. How is Varga, the half-man/half-monster, killed in "Man Beast" (1956)?

Answer: He falls to his death in a climbing accident.

Steve rescues Connie from Varga by knocking the sherpa out cold. The two try to escape down the mountain but Varga awakens and follows them. The experienced climber drives a piton into a crack in the rocks and threads a rope through a carabiner with which to rappel and catch up with them. When the rope takes his weight, the piton slips out and he tumbles a very long way to his death.
8. For what is Troy Donahue best known in the world of horror and science fiction movie making?

Answer: acting

Troy Donahue (1936-1941) was a sex symbol, demonstrating his talents as an actor in television and motion pictures, as well as in a modestly successful singing career. He had a minor role (as a dynamite expert) in "The Monolith Monsters" (1957) and another (as a college student) in "Monster on the Campus" (1958).

His most major role was his appearance opposite Sandra Dee in "A Summer Place" (1959). This led to a role in the television series "Surfside 6" (1960-62). In later life, he had parts in "Jules Verne's Rocket to the Moon" (1967), "Dr. Alien" (1989), "The Chilling" (1989), "Omega Cop" (1990), and "Merchants of Venus" (1998).
9. Where is "Giant from the Unknown" (1958) set?

Answer: Pine Ridge, California

The events in "Giant from the Unknown" occur in the fictional small mountain community of Pine Ridge, California, and the nearby Devil's Crag. Filming took place at Fawnskin in San Bernardino County, and in the Big Bear Valley of the San Bernardino National Forest.
10. In "The Man Who Could Cheat Death" (1959), why doesn't Dr. Ludwig Weiss, the co-discoverer of the rejuvenation treatment, perform the operation on Dr. Bonnet?

Answer: He had a stroke and can't use one hand.

Dr. Bonnet's partner and friend, Dr. Ludwig Weiss, played by Arnold Marlé, has performed the gland transplant surgery on Dr. Bonnet many times. He has since had a stroke at his home in Switzerland and is physically incapable of performing the surgery. Weiss is 89 years old and does not have the use of his right hand.
