Celebrity Squares Trivia Questions

1. Which dimpled comedian/comedienne who also acted in "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World" (1963) joined the US Army to fight in WWII for a few years?

From Quiz
American Celebrities in the Armed Forces - 4

Answer: Buddy Hackett

Buddy Hackett had suffered from Bell's Palsy when he was a child. This caused his face to become partially paralyzed, which in turn caused his characteristic lisp and movement of his lips. This didn't stop him from enlisting in the US Army when he finished high school, though. At eighteen years of age beginning in 1942, he served in an anti-aircraft battery until the war was over, at which time he started his career as a stand-up comedian and movie actor. None of the other people in the options provided in this question served in the military.

2. Which "Golden Girl" was in the Marine Corps?

From Quiz American Celebrities in the Armed Forces - 3

Answer: Bea Arthur

Bea Arthur (née Frankel) was born in 1922, so when WWII broke out, she was a young woman who wanted to do her part to help the American war effort. The United States Marine Corps Women's Reserve was developed and authorized by Franklin Roosevelt in 1942. Arthur joined up soon after. She attended basic training and was assigned as a typist in Washington, D.C. She requested a transfer in 1943 when she became a truck driver in North Carolina for the remainder of the war. After attaining the rank of staff sergeant, she received an honourable discharge in 1945.

3. What job did Benny Hill have during the invasion at Normandy?

From Quiz British Celebrities in the Armed Forces

Answer: Searchlight operator

Benny Hill was drafted into the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers in the British Army in 1942. Although he was trained as a mechanic, he did a number of jobs during his time in the military, including mechanic, truck driver, and searchlight operator in Normandy. In 1944, he transferred to the Combined Services Entertainment division to entertain his fellow troops for the remainder of the war.

Unfortunately, the concert was not properly registered as a charity event beforehand, so most of the money raised was taxed and held up in court for a decade before it could be used to benefit the Bangladeshi refugees. The benefit concert was the first time Ringo Star and George Harrison shared the stage together since 1966 and was also the first live performance Bob Dylan had given in 5 years.
