10. In which country did Angela Merkel (née Kasner) become the Chancellor in 2005?

From Quiz She Rules

Answer: Germany

Angela Merkel is arguably the best known of the ten ladies you'll meet in these questions. She was born in Hamburg (then West Germany) in 1954. A few months later, her father obtained a job in the state of Brandenburg (then part of East Germany) and so the family moved to what was then another country. Angela studied physics in Leipzig (East Germany). She married Ulrich Merkel in 1977 and took his surname. When the marriage ended in 1982 and Angela remarried Joachim Sauer in 1998, she stuck with the surname of her first husband - which is not the habit in Germany. In December 1989, a month after the Berlin Wall came down and while reunification of East and West Germany was being prepared, Merkel joined the new party Democratic Awakening. This East German party merged with the Christlich-Demokratischer Union (CDU, a centrum-conservative party) after both countries were reunited. In 1990 Merkel was elected to the Bundestag (parliament). She was appointed Minister of Women and Youth (1990-1994) and later Minister of Environment and Nuclear Energy (1994-1998). After the CDU was in the opposition for several years, Merkel's party won the 2005 election with a narrow margin over the SPD (socialist party). The CDU and the SPD then formed a government, with Merkel as Chancellor (function comparable to a Prime Minister). Merkel won the subsequent elections in 2009, 2013 and 2017 and thus could stay on as Chancellor for her fourth legislature. Merkel is especially known for her call to receive and integrate immigrants: "Wir schaffen das" ("We can do it").

11. In what present day country was Adolf Hitler born?

From Quiz Interesting Trivia about World Leaders

Answer: Austria

Adolph Hitler was born 20 April 1889 in Braunau am Inn, Austria, just across the border from Germany. Austria at that time was part of Austria-Hungary. He was raised near Linz, Austria, then moved to Germany in 1913 as a young adult. He became a German citizen in 1932, a year before he became Chancellor in 1933.

12. His ambition was to conquer and unite all of Europe under his command, and he might have achieved that had his army not got cold feet. Still, who was it who became president of two countries?

From Quiz Sliding Rulers

Answer: Napoleon Bonaparte

Napoleon was President of the French Republic from 1799 to 1804, and President of the Italian Republic between 1802 and 1805. There is a caveat here in that the Italian Republic is not the modern country of Italy that we now know. Italy was a region of individual states with their own rulers until the Napoleonic wars, when France invaded and conquered the northern part. It became a client state of the French Republic. The southern part was ruled by Napoleon's brother-in-law the King of Naples.

13. The American television show "Silver Spoons" included a joke delivered by Ricky Schroder towards the Soviet leader. What leader's name provided the punchline to the following joke? "Hey Yuri, why don't you walk up to a cliff, _________"

From Quiz Quit Laughing--I Am Your Leader

Answer: Andropov

Yes, it's a corny joke, but then most of the jokes from "Silver Spoons" were. Yuri Andropov's brief rule in the Soviet Union was actually very interesting for the Western World. On one hand, he was a former KGB leader, seemingly as hardline as his predecessors Khrushchev and Brezhnev. On the other hand, he may be best remembered for his exchange of letters with a 10-year old American girl, Samantha Smith. Dear Mr. Andropov, My name is Samantha Smith. I am ten years old. Congratulations on your new job. I have been worrying about Russia and the United States getting into a nuclear war. Are you going to vote to have a war or not? If you aren't please tell me how you are going to help to not have a war. This question you do not have to answer, but I would like to know why you want to conquer the world or at least our country. God made the world for us to live together in peace and not to fight. Sincerely, Samantha Smith Dear Samantha, I received your letter, which is like many others that have reached me recently from your country and from other countries around the world. It seems to me - I can tell by your letter - that you are a courageous and honest girl, resembling Becky, the friend of Tom Sawyer in the famous book of your compatriot Mark Twain. This book is well known and loved in our country by all boys and girls. [Most of the letter is omitted here in the interest of brevity.] We want peace - there is something that we are occupied with: growing wheat, building and inventing, writing books and flying into space. We want peace for ourselves and for all peoples of the planet. For our children and for you, Samantha. I invite you, if your parents will let you, to come to our country, the best time being this summer. You will find out about our country, meet with your contemporaries, visit an international children's camp - Artek - on the sea. And see for yourself: in the Soviet Union, everyone is for peace and friendship among peoples. Thank you for your letter. I wish you all the best in your young life. Y. Andropov

14. Hitler became chancellor of Germany on January 30, 1933. How many days before or after this did Roosevelt become US president?

From Quiz Hitler vs Roosevelt

Answer: 33 days later on March 4

Roosevelt became US president on March 4, 1933. The 21st amendment to the Constitution was ratified that year and changed the date of the president's term to start on January 20 but didn't take effect until the following term. Thus Roosevelt's first term was shorter than his second and third because it lasted 43 days fewer than four years.

15. Andrew Johnson stepped up to the role of US President following the tragic death of the man who delivered the Gettysburg Address on November 19th 1863. Which fellow was this?

From Quiz Follow That Fellow

Answer: Abraham Lincoln

Abraham Lincoln, the US President during the American Civil War, died on April 15th 1865, after being shot in the head whilst attending a play at Ford's Theatre the previous evening. His assassin, John Wilkes Booth, an actor who opposed the abolition of slavery, was killed 11 days later by a Union Army soldier. Lincoln's address at the dedication of the cemetery for the soldiers killed at the Battle of Gettysburg is now one of the best-known speeches in American history. With the opening line "four score and seven years ago" he linked the struggles of the Civil War to the founding principles of the United States of America, set out in the Declaration of Independence in 1776. Garfield, McKinley and Kennedy were the other US Presidents to have been assassinated up to the end of the twentieth century. In total, during this period eight US Presidents died in office: four were assassinated and four died of natural causes.

18. "Do you know me?", asked this man in a famous 1975 American Express television commercial. Who was this forgotten man who ran for Vice President of the United States in 1964 only to lose by a wide margin?

From Quiz The Running Man

Answer: William E Miller

William Miller was a seven term US Congressman from Albany New York and a Conservative Republican. When Republican Presidential nominee Barry Goldwater selected Miller to be his running mate against Lyndon Johnson in the 1964 Presidential election, a national chorus of "who is that?" followed. Miller was rarely seen on the campaign trail and proved to be of little interest to the press. Goldwater/Miller lost to Johnson/Humphrey by what was then the largest margin in history. Goldwater lost the electoral vote 486-52 and the popular vote 61.1% to 38.5%. In the aftermath of the crushing defeat, Miller dropped out of elective politics and returned to the life of a country lawyer. In 1975 credit card company American Express began an innovative marketing campaign to draw attention to its charge card. In one of the most famous commercials, an older man in a suit asks the question "Do you know who I am? I ran for the Vice President of the United States in 1964." Mr. Miller then proceeds to say that anyone carrying the Am Ex card would get instantly recognized. The scene fades with the charge card typing his name. Miler again returned to blissful anonymity and died in 1983 at the age of 69.

21. A - First on the list is Arturo Alessandri, who was president of Chile three times, initially coming to power in 1920 and finally leaving on Christmas Eve 1938. He died in 1950 in which city, the capital of Chile?

From Quiz A-Z of Alliterative World Leaders

Answer: Santiago

Arturo Alessandri first came to power in 1920 as part of the Liberal Alliance, defeating his conservative opposition Luis Barros Borgono despite losing the popular vote. As his time in power progressed he struggled with a heavily conservative congress, not enabling him to enforce any of the laws he wanted to pass and so he eventually resigned in 1924 and sought asylum in the US embassy. From this point on the country was under the rule of a military Junta known as the September Junta. However, not all members of the Junta agreed with the way the country was being run and so in a coup in January 1925 an interim liberal president, Pedro Dartnell, was appointed, until the return of Alessandri in March 1925. On his return to power he drafted a new constitution but despite this being passed in September 1925 he resigned again in October before finally resuming the position of president in 1932. He served out a normal 6-year term before losing power to Pedro Aguirre Cerda of the Radical Party in December 1938.
