Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What songstress sang the title tune and costarred in the 1960 hit movie "Where The Boys Are?"

Answer: Connie Francis

"Where the Boys Are" was one of Connie's 16 "Top 10" hits. Connie's first movie "appearance" was having her voice dubbed in for Tuesday Weld in the film "Rock Rock Rock!" Connie actually acted in four movies.
2. Playing a singing truck driver in the 1949 film "That Midnight Kiss" was the first feature movie role for what popular Italian-American singer?

Answer: Mario Lanza

Considered "difficult" to deal with, Philadelphia born Lanza acted in only seven films. He died of a heart attack, at the age of 38, in 1959.
3. What legendary singer played the title role in the film "Door to Door Maniac?"

Answer: Johnny Cash

Johnny played a sadistic killer in this 1961 film. Originally titled "Five Minutes to Live" it was Johnny's big-screen debut. This grim low budget film also featured Vic Tayback ("Alice") and Ronnie Howard.
4. Who played a Confederate spy in the 1965 film "The Fastest Guitar Alive"?

Answer: Roy Orbison

As part of an incentive package to leave Monument records and jump to MGM, Roy was offered a movie career along with singing. His acting and the movie weren't very good and his major hits dried up for years. At the age of nine Roy had his own radio show in Vernon, Texas.
5. London's "great train robbery" of 1963 was the subject of a 1988 movie. What drummer/singer played the title role?

Answer: Phil Collins

The film was "Buster". It was the story of Ronald (Buster) Edwards, a small-time crook involved in the 1963 robbery of a UK train carrying used British banknotes. He managed to escape to Mexico but homesickness brought him back to the UK and he turned himself in. After his release in 1975 he sold flowers from a stall until his suicide (by hanging) in 1994.
6. In 1960 this popular rock 'n roller showed his acting talent in two movies. Who was this guy playing college girl Mamie Van Doren's boyfriend?

Answer: Conway Twitty

In "College Confidential" Conway played Mamie's boyfriend Marvin. With his big rock 'n roll hits behind him by the early 60's, Conway shifted gears and went on to become a country music superstar. His biggest R&R hit "It's Only Make Believe" reached # 1 in 1958.
7. This 1940s big-band singer made the transition to the silver screen and became a major movie star of the '50s and '60s. Her 38 movies were followed by a popular TV series. Who was she?

Answer: Doris Day

Growing up, Doris had dreams of becoming a professional ballerina. A leg-crushing auto accident ended those dreams and she went on to take singing lessons. Doris received an Oscar nomination as "Best Actress In A Leading Role" for her performance in "Pillow Talk". She lost to Simone Signoret for her role in "Room at the Top."
8. This double Grammy-winning singer could act as well as he could sing; in 1964 he was nominated for a "Best Supporting Actor" Academy Award for his portrayal of a "shell shocked" airman. Who is it?

Answer: Bobby Darin

Bobby's Grammys were for "Mack the Knife" and "Best New Singer". His Oscar nomination was for his role in the star-studded film "Captain Newman, M.D." "Mack the Knife" was, amazingly, Bobby's only # 1 hit record; it topped the Billboard charts for nine weeks in 1959.
9. This popular singer starred in 1962 film "Two Tickets To Paris." It wasn't very successful (maybe too many plot "twists") and it was back to singing for him. Who was he?

Answer: Joey Dee

After Chubby Checker, Joey Dee certainly got the most milage out of the "Twist" craze of the early '60s. Joey and his group "The Starliters" had a number one hit with "Peppermint Twist" in early 1962. Joey attended Paterson State College (in NJ) with hopes of becoming a History or English teacher.
10. John Wayne worked with many singers over the years. Which of these guys was NOT featured in a John Wayne western?

Answer: Marty Robbins

Though Marty is best known as a country and western singer("Gunfighter Ballads" etc) he has also released two LPs of Hawaiian music and a calypso themed album. Marty was "discovered" by Little Jimmy Dickens when his tour took him to Phoenix. He met Marty (who had a radio show there) and got him hooked up with the folks at CBS Records. Stardom was just ahead.
