Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What major project in the state of Alaska ran from 1974 to 1977 and at the peak of construction employed over 21,000 people?

Answer: Trans-Alaska Pipeline

The project involved the laying of a 48 inch diameter pipeline from Prudhoe Bay, Alaska on the Arctic Ocean to the Gulf of Alaska at Valdez, Alaska, a distance of approximately 800 miles. In addition to crossing many rivers and streams, three mountain ranges had to be crossed. Due to the permafrost conditions in Alaska less than 50% of the pipeline is buried in the ground, the rest had to be installed on elevations above the ground. The estimated cost of the project was about $8 billion.

The etymology of the word "toadstool" is rather simple: it was created as a fanciful name for a poisonous mushroom in Middle English on which a toad would imaginatively rest. Since toads were long-considered poisonous, the pair were often associated with each other.

7. The little man who went home with Greer Garson in 1942 would ordinarily have been made out of gold metal, but was instead made of plaster. What was this "man's" name?

Answer: Oscar

During World War II, the Academy Award (Oscar) statuettes were made out of plaster due to the scarcity of metal--and not out of wood like is often thought. After the war, the plaster statuettes were replaced with real ones, made from britannium alloy and then plated in gold. Greer Garson won the Academy Award for Best Actress in 1942 for the film "Mrs. Miniver".

9. What do the oldest US hockey team in the NHL, the crook turned detective in Jack Boyle's 20th-century fiction, and one of the winningest NBA basketball teams have in common?

Answer: Boston

Founded in 1924, there are no older professional hockey teams in the United States than the Boston Bruins. They are the third oldest team in the NHL, counting Canadian teams. They win often. Boston Blackie first appeared in short stories published in magazines. His career expanded into movies (both silent and sound), a radio series (1944-1950), a television series, and even graphic novels. He is well-remembered for his catch line describing himself as an "enemy to those who make him an enemy, a friend to those who have no friend." The Boston Celtics have long held the most championships in the National Basketball Association. They are one of the teams which founded the NBA in 1946.

10. The American Eagle, Canadian Maple Leaf, and Austrian Philharmonic are all examples of what?

Answer: Bullion coins

Many countries mint special coins for people who want to invest in precious metals, such as silver, gold, and platinum. Often these coins contain one troy ounce of precious metal, although they may also be issued in fractions of an ounce, and occasionally multiples of an ounce. These coins can usually be purchased directly from the mint, or through dealers on the secondary market, at a small premium over the melt value of the metal.
