Answer: 8

Yes it's eight! Microsoft released Windows '8' in October 2012. Pluto has been classified as a dwarf planet since 2006, leaving a 2012 balance of 'eight' planets. Spiders, scorpions, mites and ticks are all arachnids which all have 'eight' legs.

3. What do the actor who played the male lead in "Lois and Clark: The New Adventures of Superman," the man who slayed his brother Abel in the Bible, and an 1821 play by Lord Byron about the biblical murder of Abel have in common?

Answer: Cain

Dean George Cain is a graduate of Princeton University, played professional football for the Buffalo Bills, and starred as Superman on the television series (1993-97). The story of Cain and Abel appears in the Old Testament Book of Genesis, Chapter 4 (and also in the Koran). Lord Byron wrote "Cain" as a closet drama telling the story of the murder of Abel (which doesn't happen until the third act) from the viewpoint of his brother Cain.

4. In their slogan, how many varieties is the Heinz company famous for?

Answer: 57 Varieties

The number 57 does not relate to the quantity of products offered by the Heinz company. The numbers 5 and 7 held a special significance for founder H.J. Heinz and his wife, he adopted the slogan 57 Varieties.

5. Which semi-precious blue stone mined in Afghanistan was found in the funeral mask of Tutankhamun?

Answer: Lapis lazuli

There is evidence that lapis lazuli was mined in the 7th millennium BC in Badakhshan, a region of Northern Afghanistan peopled by Tajiks that still produces most of the world's supply. In medieval Europe, lapis lazuli was ground into a powder and made into a pigment called ultramarine. As it cost more than saffron or gold, it was usually reserved for the garment of the Virgin Mary in paintings.

6. What do the technology manufacturer most often mentioned in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy", Orion's hunting dog (according to Homer), and a North American satellite radio network founded in 2002 have in common?

Answer: Sirius

In the world imagined by Douglas Adams in "The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy," (1979 et seq.) the Sirius Cybernetics Corporation is the most inept of all possible makers of robots and other devices intended to serve man. Perhaps the most annoying of these failings is the drink dispenser which produces a hot drink that tastes not entirely unlike tea. In Homer's "Iliad", Sirius is named as the hunter Orion's canine companion. Based in New York City, Sirius Satellite Radio is a subscription radio service which covers North America with its satellite signal. Based on a business model akin to pay-for-service cable TV, Sirius provides a wide variety of commercial-free 24-hours per day channels.

8. What do a 1956 movie starring Bill Haley and His Comets, a device which uses the frequency of atomic processes to determine time, and an Agatha Christie novel in which Hercule Poirot visits no crime scenes and interviews no witnesses have in common?

Answer: clock

Perhaps the first rock-and-roll movie, "Rock Around the Clock," was based on the success of Bill Haley and His Comets' success with the song "Rock Around the Clock." The film also featured The Platters, Tony Martinez and His Mambo, and Freddie Bell and His Bellboys. As the need for ultraprecision in timekeeping has increased due to innovations such as GPS, the technology of timekeeping has become more and more refined. A so-called atomic clock uses the microwave signal that electrons in atoms emit when they change energy levels. Each step in progress produces increased accuracy and reliability in atomic clocks. Hercule Poirot solves the mystery in "The Clocks" entirely inside his head without observing a crime scene nor speaking with witnesses nor suspects. The novel became part of the ITV series "Agatha Christie's Poirot" in 2010.

9. What do a fictional character in James Joyce's "Ulysses" who appears in the novel's first sentence, Burt Campbell in "SOAP" and Dr. Harry Weston in "Empty Nest", and an American jazz saxophonist who teamed with trumpeter Chet Baker have in common?

Answer: Mulligan

The character who is the subject of the first sentence in James Joyce's "Ulysses" is Malachi "Buck" Mulligan. Richard Mulligan won Emmy Awards for his portrayals of fathers in "Soap" (1980) and "Empty Nest" (1989). The latter was a spin off from "The Golden Girls." Gerry Mulligan (1932-2000) and Chet Baker (1929-1988) might have made sweet music forever if they had been able get their respective recoveries from hard drugs together. Mulligan composed the theme for "A Thousand Clowns" (1965). He played with Dave Brubeck, Miles Davis, Charles Mingus, Mel Tormé and George Shearing.

10. I'm in County Cork in search of some of that famous Irish Blarney. I need to kiss the Stone of Eloquence, but where am I going to find it?

Answer: Embedded high up in a castle wall

You have to earn 'the gift of the gab'. Climb some 50 feet to the top of the partially ruined Blarney Castle and walk along the ramparts to the centre point of a gap. This is presumably where boiling oil could have been poured over the besiegers during the Irish confederate wars. Sit on a stone shelf, with your back to the battlements, and lean back so that your head drops into this gap and where a stone is embedded beneath the overhang. Kiss it, remembering to hold onto the two handrails embedded in the wall, and pray that the attendant gripping you to stop you from sliding over the edge doesn't suddenly sneeze.
