Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. On 28 January 1887, in Fort Keogh, Montana, what fell from the sky, measuring 15 inches (38 cm) across, the largest ever?

Answer: A snowflake

Made up of many small snowflakes, this giant was seen and measured by the army soldiers manning Fort Keogh. Not one to catch on your tongue! The wrong answers have all precipitated somewhere in the world, in what is known as 'non-aqueous rain'.

2. In 2002, Queen Elizabeth II celebrated what was called the Golden Jubilee. How many years are in a Golden Jubilee?

Answer: 50

A Golden Jubilee celebrates the 50th anniversary of the reign of a monarch. Elizabeth II ascended the throne in 1952, so 2002 was the 50th year of her reign. A 50th wedding anniversary is also represented by gold. The celebration of a jubilee can be traced to the Christian religion, and prior to that to Judaism (where it also relates to a period of 50 years).

3. Of these choices, where is the best place to go in the event of a tornado near your house?

Answer: Underground or central room of your home

Never stay in a mobile home during a tornado. Position yourself as far as possible away from windows and outside walls. Here's the thing: tornadoes cause funny things to happen--unexplainable and strange. For example, stalks of wheat have skewered a brick wall during a tornado. Going underground is the best option. However, not to worry; just pay attention to the local radar, seek shelter when necessary, never stay in a mobile home, and if you are driving, do not park or seek shelter under an overpass.

4. Young children are often described as suffering from 'separation anxiety'. What does this common diagnosis usually refer to?

Answer: Fear of being separated from a parent or guardian

Children, typically under age three, often suffer pangs of fear when they are temporarily separated from a parent or caregiver. Children may instinctively feel that their safety and well-being is jeopardized when they are away from their primary caretakers. Separation anxiety is often exhibited through crying, screaming, calling for the absent parent, and/or tantrums. Separation anxiety typically subsides before age three, as children become aware that their caretakers will return and that they have not been abandoned.

5. Which of these statements is NOT true?

Answer: Elephants can jump.

Elephants can't jump because the bones in their legs are packed too closely to be flexible enough to allow jumping.

Other choices: Camels' eyelids are thin, allowing them to be seen through. Rabbits are so small that they may ingest their excretion to glean more nutrients from their meals. Bolivia's capitals have been Sucre and La Paz.

6. Who was "little Lord Fauntleroy"?

Answer: a character from a classic novel

"Little Lord Fauntleroy" was a classic novel written for children by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It was published around 1886. It was originally published as a serial in "St Nicholas Magazine" around 1885. Several movies have been made based on the book.

8. What do a model of Ford motorcar introduced in 1964, a barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast reaching from Corpus Christi to Port Aransas, and a WWII fighter-bomber built by North American Aviation to British specifications have in common?

Answer: Mustang

Ford sought to launch a sports car built on the platform of the Falcon compact; the result was the Mustang. The "pony cars" have been successful ever since. Mustang Island reaches 18 miles in length and connects by bridge to Padre Island. The beaches are a hot location during spring break. The North American P-51 Mustang was a workhorse in WWII, used by the American Army Air Force to escort bombers over Germany and by the RAF as fighter-bombers throughout Europe. The airplane was powered variously by Rolls Royce, Allison, Merlin and Packard engines. They continued to be used well into the Korean War.

9. Almost every person living of English descent is a descendant of which English monarch?

Answer: Edward III

Edward III (1312-1377) and his wife, Philippa of Hainault, had children. A lot of children. Ten, altogether. And those children had a lot of children. So many, in fact, that it is mathematically nearly impossible NOT to be a descendent of Edward III if you have any English ancestry at all. I'm at least a ninth cousin of Queen Elizabeth (four times removed), and you are likely to be as well if you have English ancestry. Proving it, of course, is a different matter. The incorrect answers have no living descendants.

10. I'm sure the 16th US President would have approved: when an American optician decided to pay off the last $620 of his mortgage, which kind of hard cash did he use?

Answer: One-cent coins

Thomas Diagle presented 62,000 one-cent coins to his mortgage company in Milford, Massachusetts. He said he had been collecting pennies ever since taking out the mortgage 35 years before. "Pennies add up. I was just praying I didn't die first", he said afterwards. (The 16th President, Abraham Lincoln, is, of course, portrayed on one-cent coins.)
