My previous attempts at writing an easy quiz failed. Let's try again. Questions are extremely esoteric, multiple choices are obvious.

Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Sci-Tech. How do you call a polygon with an infinite number of sides?

Answer: Apeirogon

The name of this polygon derives from the Ancient Greek word "apeiron", meaning "without limits". You could say that such a polygon is just imaginary, or a product of mind. But all polygons are: have you ever seen a perfect triangle in nature?
2. Sport. Who won the Ski World Cup in 1971?

Answer: Gustav Thöni

Gustav Thöni was born in Trafoi, at the feet of Stelvio Pass in Bozen Province. So he is an Italian citizen, even if his first language is German. He was one of the greatest skiers of all time, winning four Ski World Cups in the '70s, along with three Olympic medals and four World Championship gold medals.
3. Geography. Which town you can visit when you cross the border and enter Portugal coming from North?

Answer: Valença do Minho

Valença is a nice town of 8000 that got the status of "city" in 2009. Minho is the northernmost region of Portugal, a very peaceful and secluded rural area, where life has always been hard. Most of the first Portuguese settlers in Brazil came from Minho.
4. History. A battle that took place in 1859 in Italy was witnessed by the future founder of International Red Cross, Henri Dunant. What's the name of this battle, fought by the French and Piedmontese armies against the Austrian Empire?

Answer: Solferino

The losses at Solferino were so high (37000 among the killed, wounded and missing) that French Emperor Napoleon III decided to end the war, much to the disappointment of the Piedmontese king who hoped to gain many more territories for the soon-to-be born Kingdom of Italy.

The Swiss Henri Dunant was inspired by the suffering on both sides for the creation of International Committee of the Red Cross, established in 1863. His work, his writings and ideas inspired the Geneva Convention. Dunant was awarded the first Nobel Peace Prize in 1901.
5. Animals. How do you call the only mammals that lay eggs?

Answer: Monotremes

Monotremes means "single hole" (the posterior one, I think). They lay eggs, have mammary glands and feed their young. Platypus and Echidna are the only surviving monotremes. Ovis are the sheep. Since "ovum" is Latin for egg, it could be a red (a very pale red) herring.
6. Literature. Which romantic novel has among its characters Renzo, Lucia, Don Abbondio, Don Rodrigo, Cardinal Borromeo and Fra Cristoforo and it's mainly set on Lake Como?

Answer: Alessandro Manzoni's "I Promessi Sposi (The Betrothed)"

This book is the most famous Italian Romantic novel, an historical romance in Walter Scott's style. The author, Milanese poet Manzoni, worked on it for many years, wrote three complete versions of the story, and finally published it in 1827. Manzoni wanted to provide a model for modern Italian language, that's why he moved to Florence for some time, to "rinse the clothes in the Arno River" as he said, meaning that he wanted to use a pure Florentine language. The book is still studied in all Italian schools, and for this reason is loathed by generations of Italian students.
7. Music. Who played bass in the German rock band "The Rattles"?

Answer: Herbert Hildebrand

One of the many bands of the Beat Era, the Rattles played in Hamburg when also the Beatles did. They sold a million copies of their 1970 single "The Witch" that was later covered by Rosetta Stone.
8. Religion. Baptism, Confirmation, Holy Communion, Confession, Marriage, Holy Orders, and the Anointing of the Sick: for a Roman Catholic, these are the Seven what?

Answer: Sacraments

The Sacraments are considered outward signs of inward grace. The first three are called sacraments of Initiation or primary Sacraments from which the rest of a man's life as a Roman Catholic depends. Baptism is given after birth, Holy Communion and Confirmation during childhood.

In this period one starts to practice Confession of Sins too. Confirmation is given once, Holy Communion and Confession how often one wants (at least once a year). Marriage and Holy Orders once and forever (even in some cases Marriage can be annulled).

The Anointing of the Sick is given to people when they are supposed to be at the end of their terrestrial journey.
9. Humanities. Which Greek philosopher was the teacher of Democritus and founder of Atomism?

Answer: Leucippus

Leucippus lived in 5th Century BC. He's credited by many to have invented atomism, the theory according to which the reality is composed by vacuum (the non-being) and atoms, indivisible bodies that form all beings.
Atomism was continued by Democritus and Epicurus. And it took some time to demonstrate that atoms are, after all, divisible.
10. Movies. Directors: Walter Turszinsky, Robert Wiene. Country: Germany. Year: 1915. Starring Vera Witt. Can you guess the title of this film?

Answer: Der springende Hirsch oder Die Diebe von Günstersburg

The title means "The Springing Deer or the Thieves of Günstersburg". Robert Weine is especially famous for his 1920's "Das Cabinet des Dr. Caligari", a great Expressionist Film and a great early horror movie. Really scary even if it's silent. In those times, an original score was written for films, and performed live in the theatre by a small orchestra or a pianist.

Another curiosity is that films were shot in black and white, and subsequently coloured: each roll had its particular hue.
