For 46 years, the conflict between the U.S. and the Soviet Union was known as the Cold War. After the beginning of the Korean War, President Truman demanded that a United Nations force stop North Korea from invading South Korea. However, a Soviet-backed government ruled North Korea.

The conflicts between the U.S. and the Soviet Union continued to unfold and get worse, and then the Korean War began. Americans feared that communists were working inside the U.S. To ease the worries, Truman ordered loyalty checks to everyone who worked in the government and gave Congress permission to carry out investigations. Korea, Vietnam, Chile, Grenada, El Salvador, Somalia, Nicaragua, Cuba, Iraq, Iran, Hungary, Greece, Malaysia, Czechoslovakia, Afghanistan, Poland, and many others were major hot spots for the Cold War.

The Texans had taken up posts in a Spanish mission we now call the Alamo. When Mexican troops attacked, the Texans found themselves outnumbered, 150 to 6,000. Although young William B. Travis sent out for larger forces, only 40 available Texans responded.

The count of Texans was now 190. When the battle ended, 1,500 Mexicans and 180 Texans lay dead. Most of the surviving Texans were executed. The fall of the Alamo made the Texans thirsty for revenge. They attacked Mexican troops on the San Jacinto river.

The battle known as the battle of San Jacinto lasted 18 minutes. The victorious Texans killed 630 Mexicans and captured 700. Later they captured Santa Ana, leader of the Mexican forces, and forced him to sign a treaty giving Texas independence.
