The Tornados were an instrumental group from London and they achieved this feat in December 1962 with "Telstar". It also reached number one the UK Singles Chart. In 1963 the group had four other hits that made it into the UK Singles charts but no other achievements in the USA. The Beatles reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in February 1964 with "I Want to Hold Your Hand" plus another five in that same year.

The Animals reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 in September 1964 with "The House of the Rising Sun". Manfred Mann also reached number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with "Do Wah Diddy Diddy" in October 1964.

Brian Hyland is from Queens, New York City and he formed his own harmonica group called The Delfis at age 14. He then went solo and had little success with "Rosemary" and "Four Little Heels (The Clickety Clack Song)" before hitting number one with the novelty song "Itsy Bitsy Teenie Weenie Yellow Polka Dot Bikini".
Patti Page (1927-2013) was an American singer who recorded a number one hit with "(How Much is That) Doggie in the Window" in 1953.
Jerry Samuels under the name of Napoleon XIV released "They're Coming to Take Me Away, Ha-Haaa" which peaked at number three on the US Billboard Hot 100 in August 1966.
Sheb Wooley (1921-2003) was an actor and singer and released the number one hit on the US Billboard Top 100 with "The Purple People Eater" in 1958. Sheb appeared in many western movies and portrayed Pete Nolan the scout on the TV series "Rawhide" from 1959-1966.

The interesting thing about "Wooden Heart" is that Elvis Presley hit top spot in the UK in March 1961 but only released it in the USA in November 1964 as a B-side to "Blue Christmas". Joe Dowell hit number one on the US Billboard Hot 100 with the song in August 1961, five months after Elvis had released it in the UK.

"Mellow Yellow" reached number two in the USA and number eight in the UK in 1966. "Hurdy Gurdy Man" peaked at number five in the USA and number four in the UK in 1968.

His other UK hits were "Universal Soldier" and "Colours". He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2012.

They also had another number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 with "Bridge over Troubled Water" in February 1970.
The Righteous Brothers (Bobby Hatfield and Bill Medley) were a musical duo that started performing together in 1962. Their two number one hits in the 1960s were "You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin'" (1964) and "(You're My) Soul and Inspiration" (1966).
Sonny and Cher Bono were a husband and wife duo who had "I Got You Babe" as a their only number one hit on the US Billboard Hot 100 which was in 1965.
The Everly Brothers ( Don and Phil) were rock and roll singers who had two number one hits in the 1950s with "Wake Up Little Susie" (1957) and "All I Have to Do is Dream" (1958). Their only number one hit in the 60s was in 1960 with "Cathy's Clown".
