Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Who was up early to see "The Piper At The Gates Of Dawn"?

Answer: Pink Floyd

This was Pink Floyd's debut album. The title was taken from the title of chapter seven of Kenneth Grahame's 1908 novel "The Wind in the Willows" regarding the nature god Pan playing his flute at dawn. It reached number six on the U.K. album charts but apparently because of poor distribution and promotion of the album in the U.S. by Capitol Records (who decided to release it on their low-budget label Tower Records) it only reached number 131 on the Billboard 200 album chart. Still, it is considered by many critics as an important psychedelic music album.
2. Which group released "Waiting For The Sun"?

Answer: The Doors

This 1968 album was the Doors' third, and their only one to go to number one on the Billboard 200 album list. The band found themselves in a bit of a hole because they didn't have many good songs to record. One standout song was "Hello, I Love You" which became their second number one single.
3. "Between The Buttons" was a properly attired album by whom?

Answer: Rolling Stones

"Between The Buttons", a 1967 album, is often overlooked in the Stones's catalog. The U.K. version contained no big hits; the U.S. version had "Ruby Tuesday" and "Let's Spend the Night Together". It was the last album produced by Andrew Loog Oldham, who had been their manager and producer from the beginning. Mick Jagger said the only song on the album he really liked was "Back Street Girl"; it was on the U.K. version of this album but the U.S. had to wait until the "Flowers" album came out two months later.
4. They weren't convicts but they were "Over Under Sideways Down". Who were they?

Answer: Yardbirds

"Yardbird" is a U.S. slang term for a prisoner or a soldier assigned to menial tasks. In the case of the rock band of that name it was the start of super-stardom for Eric Clapton, Jimmy Page and Jeff Beck. Probably the best known songs on this album are "Over Under Sideways Down" and "Jeff's Boogie".

The album is officially known as "The Yardbirds" in the U.K. but often referred to as "Roger the Engineer" because of a rather unflattering cover picture of recording engineer Roger Cameron drawn by band member Chris Dreja.
5. You might be sulky too if you were "In Search Of The Lost Chord". What would we call you and your mates?

Answer: Moody Blues

Released in 1968, this was the second concept album by the Moody Blues (the first being "Days of Future Passed"), the concept being quest and discovery. The five band members played all the instruments on the album, numbering over thirty. Over the years the band released both progressive rock and pop material.
6. Who released the album "Bless Its Pointed Little Head"?

Answer: Jefferson Airplane

This album, from 1969, was the group's first live album. It was recorded at the Fillmore East auditorium in New York City and the Fillmore West in San Francisco. "Somebody to Love" was the most popular of their songs featured on the album which was more rock and a little less psychedelia.
7. "Axis Bold As Love" was a big statement by which group?

Answer: Jimi Hendrix Experience

This was Hendrix's second album, released in December, 1967, seven months after "Are You Experienced". Because of this, the U.S. distributor - Reprise Records - held up release until January, 1968. Though the album contained no blockbuster singles it was very well received, reaching number five on the UK Official Charts, number three on the US Billboard 200 albums list, and reflecting its rhythm and blues heritage, number six on the US Top R&B Albums list.
8. No politicians here, just some musicians. Who recorded "Disraeli Gears"?

Answer: Cream

If the Yardbirds can't quite be called the first musical supergroup, this one can. Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce and Ginger Baker formed the group which lasted from 1966 to 1968 and left a lasting impression on hard rock and blues rock. "Disraeli Gears" from 1967 featured "Sunshine of Your Love" and "Strange Brew".

The head-scratching name of the album was the result of a misspoken word by band crew member Mick Turner, who was trying to say "derailleur gears" in regards to a bicycle.
9. No 1,500 watt amplifiers here, just "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden", by whom?

Answer: Donovan

Donovan (Donovan Leitch) was a prolific songwriter and recording artist. "A Gift From A Flower To A Garden" was his fifth album and first double album. Each of the 1967 album's records were also released separately. Originally known as a folksinger he branched out into psychedelia and world music. "Wear Your Love Like Heaven" was the single release from the album. Though fairly well received by fans and critics the album only reached number 19 in the U.S. listing and failed to chart in the U.K.
10. Saddle up, pardner, and tell us who was thinking about the "Sweetheart Of The Rodeo".

Answer: The Byrds

The Byrds were the progenitors of folk rock music, with some country music influences here and there. Then they added Graham Parsons to the band in 1968. He wanted to experiment with making a new genre, which would come to be called country rock. This album, which the Byrds had planned but not recorded at that point, got turned around by Parsons's influence into a completely country album.

By the time the album was finished Parsons had so alienated Byrds leader Roger McGuinn that Parsons flew off to become a Flying Burrito Brother.

The album, now noted as a milestone in country rock was, of course, hated by the Nashville country music big wigs.
