My 45 rpm Record Collection Trivia Quiz

I've looked through my dusty old collection of vinyl and hauled out a few that I am still able to sing all the way through. (This drives my son crazy.) The tunes and artists are all of the 1960 to 1967 vintage.

quiz
Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Bob Dylan sang about two 'Rainy Day Women'. Who were they?

Answer: #'s 12 and 35

Born Robert Zimmerman, Dylan was a folky who transformed himself -- and rock & roll -- with the album 'Highway 61 Revisited'. His back-up band became famous in their own right. After a name change, The Hawks became... The Band. (Someone should do a quiz on rock and roll name changes.)
2. The Kinks had a hit in 1964 with a day-long title. What was it?

Answer: All Day and All of the Night

1964 was their year. They hit the charts with 'You Really Got Me' and 'All Day and All of the Night'. Brothers Ray and Dave Davies gave us a rather different world view later on. (I offer 'Lola' and 'Dedicated Follower of Fashion' in this category.)
3. "I wander around, from town to lonely town, I guess I'll always be just a rolling stone...." What is this song?

Answer: Teenage Idol

The artist was Ricky Nelson. He starred (along with his mother, father and brother, David) in the TV series 'The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet'.
His first big hit was 'Poor Little Fool', in 1958.
He died too young and never really received the critical praise he deserved.
4. You couldn't go to a high school dance in the mid- sixties without hearing the band cover at least one song by The Dave Clark Five. Which of the following tunes is NOT a part of their discography?

Answer: On a Carousel

The story goes that the group was formed to play gigs as a fundraising initiative for their school. ('On a Carousel' belonged to The Hollies.)
5. "Hello darkness my old friend," is the first line of which song?

Answer: Sounds of Silence

Simon and Garfunkel (aka Tom and Jerry) are together again! Melodic, and with lyrical import, the songs of Simon and Garfunkel helped to define an era and a generation. (Whoa, it sounds as though I'm writing a biography.)
6. Cream produced some great music in a short period of time. In 1968 they sang about a room. What kind of room was it?

Answer: White Room

Eric Clapton, Jack Bruce, and Ginger Baker are generally regarded as the members of the first 'supergroup'. Cream only lasted a couple of years. The band left behind some serious, hard-driving blues.
7. The Monkees had a 45 which was supposedly 'unreleased'. (Recalled is more accurate, however.) It was all to do with a flap over the flip side. The 'A' side was 'A Little Bit Me, A little Bit You'. What was the flip side?

Answer: She Hangs Out

Apparently, girls weren't allowed to hang out -- in any sense of the phrase. Does everyone know that Mike Nesmith's mother invented 'Liquid Paper' (or Whiteout)?
8. This band released the song 'Kicks' in 1966.

Answer: Paul Revere and the Raiders

Tri-corn hats, lots of teeth, youthful exhuberence, and a glitzy stage presence. This was a band your parents might have approved of. Still, they produced some memorable stuff, including 'Him or Me', and 'Hungry'.
9. Name the singer/composer who hat hits with 'Crying', 'Blue Bayou', and 'It's Over'.

Answer: Roy Orbison

One of the most unmistakable and memorable voices in rock and roll. He had a lot of heartbreak and misery in the sixties, losing first his wife, and then two children. Roy Orbison made a comeback in the late seventies and then hit big again as a member of The Travelling Wilburys. An incredible talent.
10. This singer had a hit in 1961 with the song 'Runaround Sue'. Who is he?

Answer: Dion

As popular as any teen idol in the late fifties and early sixties, Dion hit big in 1959 with 'Teenager in Love'. This was with The Belmonts. On his own, he released a few memorable tunes, including 'The Wanderer' and a few years later (in 1968) the tribute song 'Abraham, Martin, and John'.
