1. Heart of Midlothian

Answer: Jambos

Hearts are also known as Jam Tarts, both deriving from the shortened version of the name, "Hearts". Founded in 1874, Hearts are the oldest and most successful senior club in Edinburgh.

The name comes from the Old Tolbooth of Edinburgh that stood in the Royal Mile and was referred to as The Heart of Mid-Lothian. Sir Walter Scott also wrote a novel entitled "The Heart of Midlothian.
2. Charlton Athletic

Answer: Addicks

Addicks is a corruption of Haddocks, the name of a local fish and chip shop. The traditional kit of red shorts and white socks also led to another nickname. "Red Robns". Founded in 1905, the club has its home ground in south east London.
3. Sunderland

Answer: Black Cats

Sunderland's colours are red and white, but the 'Black Cats' nickname is thought to have come from the Black Cat gun battery on the River Wear. Founded in 1879, the club moved from Roker Park to the impressively named Stadium of Light in 1997.
4. Newcastle United

Answer: Magpies

This comes from the black and white striped shirts worn by the club. Other 'Magpies' in England include Maidenhead United and Chorley. Founded in 1892, Newcastle earned a reputation for longevity in the top flight of British football, spending 85 years in the top flight between 1893 and 2016, when they were relegated from the FA Premier League to the EFL Cahmpionship.
5. Manchester United

Answer: Red Devils

Probably a reference to the red shirts worn by the club, but also probably a reference to a rugby team in Salford, Greater Manchester. Crawley Town also have this nickname. Manchester United are probably one of the best known football clubs in the world.

They were founded in 1878 as Newtown Heath, but the name changed to Manchester United in 1902. Under the new name, they went on to become one of the most successful clubs in the United Kingdom.
6. Ayr United

Answer: Honest Men

The nickname comes from a line in Robert Burns' poem 'Tam O' Shanter:
"Auld Ayr, wham ne'er a toun surpasses, for honest men an' bonnie lasses." The Scottish club was formed 1902 after a merger between two clubs, Ayr Parkhouse and Ayr FC.
7. Aston Villa

Answer: Lions

The Birmingham club takes the nickname from the Lion on the club crest. The team is also familiarly referred to as "Villa" and even "The Villans". [sic]
Established in 1874, Aston Villa were one of the founder members of the Football League in 1888.
8. Ipswich Town

Answer: Tractor Boys

While opposing fans probably use the nickname in a deprecating way, the club is proud of its agricultural associations. The club was founded in 1878, but did not turn professional until 1936. Ipswich is the county town of Suffolk and is located in East Anglia.
9. Cardiff City

Answer: Bluebirds

The name comes from the traditional blue colour of the club's strip, although for a few years this was changed to red at the behest of a new owner who considered red to be lucky. However, in 2015, pressure from supporters persuaded him to change the colour back to blue after three seasons.

The club was founded in 1899 as Riverside A.F.C., and changed its name to Cardiff City in 1908.
