Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. Which UK seaside football team has the nickname The Gulls?

Answer: Torquay United FC

Blackpool, for obvious reasons, are known as The Seasiders; Bournemouth are called The Cherries as they have always played in predominately red shirts; Plymouth are called The Pilgrims as it was from here that the Pilgrim Fathers, in 1620, sailed for The New World in the Mayflower - the ship that features on the club's badge.
2. In similar vein, which UK seaside football team is nicknamed The Seagulls?

Answer: Brighton and Hove Albion FC

Brighton's club badge features a flying seagull. Southampton are known as The Saints (because they used to be called Southampton St Mary's), Hull as The Tigers (because of their black and gold playing kit) and Greenock Morton as The Pride of the Clyde (for obvious geographical reasons!)
3. Three English football teams are nicknamed The Robins - which of these teams is the odd one out?

Answer: Chesterfield FC

Chesterfield are known as The Spireites, after the town's famous Crooked Spire. Of the other three teams, Bristol City is the only one that doesn't feature a robin on its club badge.
4. A bantam is a miniature chicken, so it seems odd that there is an English football team who have The Bantams as their nickname. Which team?

Answer: Bradford City AFC

Bradford City's club badge shows a bantam. Newport, from South Wales, are known as The Exiles because during the 1989-90 season, having failed to pay the rent on their ground, they had to go over the border and play their home games at Moreton-in-March in Gloucestershire. York are known as The Minstermen after the city's great church, and Northampton are called The Cobblers because of the town's history of shoe-making.
5. Which two English football teams are nicknamed The Magpies?

Answer: Notts County FC and Newcastle United FC

Both Notts County and Newcastle play in black and white stripes, which also feature on both clubs' badges. The famous Italian club Juventus copied Notts County's strip in 1903. Gillingham are called The Gills, Exeter The Grecians and Bury The Shakers.
6. Which UK football club is nicknamed The Swans?

Answer: Swansea City AFC

The reason for Swansea being called The Swans is fairly obvious from their home city's name - their club badge is a stylised swan. Peterborough are known as The Posh after the then manager of Fletton United once said he was "Looking for posh players for a posh new team". Crawley are called The Red Devils after their kit colour, and Port Vale are called The Valiants, a play on their name.
7. Which English football club is wisely nicknamed The Owls?

Answer: Sheffield Wednesday FC

Sheffield Wednesday are the only league club in England with a day of the week in their name, and are called The Owls after a player gave them an owl mascot in 1912. Carlisle are known as The Cumbrians after their county, Everton are The Toffees or The Toffeemen after a toffee shop near the ground which made and sold Everton mints, and Rotherham are The Millers because for over 100 years they played at Millmoor stadium.
8. Which English football team has the nickname The Peacocks?

Answer: Leeds United FC

Leeds were called the Peacocks after a pub of the same name on Elland Road near their ground. Wycombe are known as The Chairboys because of the chair-making industry in High Wycombe, Scunthorpe are called The Iron because of the area's steel and iron industry, and Yeovil are called The Glovers because of the history of glove-making in the town.
9. Which UK football club is nicknamed The Bluebirds, even though there are no bluebirds in the UK?

Answer: Cardiff City FC

Cardiff are called The Bluebirds because they have almost always played in blue although they rather controversially changed to a red strip in 2012. Rochdale are called The Dale for obvious reasons, Fulham are known as The Cottagers since their ground is called Craven Cottage, and Elgin are called The Black and Whites because of their strip.
10. The Canaries are a group of Spanish islands off the African coast which got their name from the Latin for dog, but which UK football team is nicknamed The Canaries after the bird?

Answer: Norwich City FC

Norwich had links in the 15th and 16th centuries to Flemish weavers who had imported canaries from the Dutch colonies in the Caribbean, and the bird features on their club badge. Colchester are known as The U's (short for United) although a Roman eagle features on their badge; Queen of the South are known as The Doonhamers, which is what the people of Dumfries are called, and Wigan are called The Latics, a corruption of Athletic.
