Quiz Answer Key and Fun Facts
1. What is the name of the high school attended by Astrid, Lilly and their classmates?

Answer: Pine Academy

Pine Academy is a high school seen from the perspective of its teenage students. Principal Varshidi, played by Marvin Ishmael, and Vice Principal Michelle Knight, played by Megan Hutchings, are very much in evidence but the other teachers are rather scarce. Filming occurred in St. John's, Newfoundland.
2. What compelled Astrid and Lilly to become monster hunters?

Answer: They opened a portal to the underworld.

Frustrated by their ostracism by the cool kids in their high school. Astrid and Lilly accidentally and unexpectedly open a portal to another dimension. Through this portal monsters pour, intent on destroying the world. Out of a sense of responsibility, Astrid and Lilly take on the role of monster hunters in order to save humanity.
3. The title of many of the episodes appears to be the name of a body part -- "Teeth," "Amygdala," "One Rib," "Toenail," "Lips," "Hair," and "Guts." Why is this significant?

Answer: body parts necessary to close the portal

In order to close the portal they opened, the girls must not only kill a succession of monsters but must also place specific monster body parts in a magical orb. The names of the episodes are the names of the required monster body part in that episode.

The name of episode 1 is "Tontoom" which, according to the script, is an underworld name for a tongue. In it, they kill the Tearjerker, remove its tongue and place it in the orb.
4. Astrid Bell is looking for love. With whom does she find it in the first season of "Astrid and Lilly Save the World"?

Answer: Sparrow Donovan

Jana Morrison plays Astrid Bell. Her character is enthusiastically heterosexual and sexually imaginative. She is attracted to Sparrow Donovan, played by Spencer MacPherson. Sparrow seems aloof, brooding, everything you could want in an "alt" hero. Their personal denouement is sweet, touching, funny and realistic.
5. In episode 1, it is clear that Candace Powell and Tate Hudson are the primo couple in the high school. Who does Lilly end up kissing in episode 7?

Answer: Candance

Lilly Fortenberry, played by Samantha Aucoin, is being raised by a lesbian couple. She is, at the beginning of the season, unclear about her own sexuality. Candace was a childhood friend but they were estranged as Candace became the most popular girl in school.

In rebuilding their relationship, it goes beyond friendship and turns to romance. Their first kiss is a sweet spot in episode 7.
6. Why does student-athlete and heart-throb Tate Hudson call Astrid and Lilly the "pudge patrol" in episode 1?

Answer: they are plus-sized girls who spy on cool kids

Astrid and Lilly feel, as so many high school students do, that they are on the outside looking in. They set about spying on their classmates to see what makes them cool. Their idol is Olivia Benson on "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit." While they attend a party at the home of Tate Hudson, he mocks their weight by calling them "the pudge patrol." In episode 10, they adopt this epithet and appear for the final battle with the Guardian wearing pink warm-jackets with Pudge Patrol embroidered on the back.
7. "Eggs" Walczak, a fellow student, helps Astrid and Lilly, especially in the final battle in episode 10. What is the source of his name?

Answer: he was named after Egon Spengler, PhD

Michael McCreary plays Egon "Eggs" Walczak. Eggs is very bright and constantly studious. He is a never-ending source of facts which he shares without much self awareness. In episode 9, he tells Val (the theatre kid) that he "was named after Egon Spengler, PhD." Egon Spengler is a fictional parapsychologist, played by Harold Ramis in the first three "Ghostbuster" motion pictures, to which this reference is an homage.
8. In episode 7, Brutus attends the school fair and sees a stuffed animal which he takes. Why was he attracted to that particular plush toy?

Answer: it is a unicorn

When Brutus saw a unicorn, with a single horn growing out of its forehead, he identified it with the single horn growing out of his own forehead. In Episode 8, it is disclosed that that Brutus has named his unicorn Carl.
9. In episode 6, a monster called a Cavaculus possesses Principal Varshidi. When he compliments and flatters students, removing their self-doubt and insecurity, what happens to them?

Answer: their heads explode

Marvin Ishmael plays Principal Varshidi. The Cavaculus has no body of its own and needs a host in order to work its evil. It possesses Principal Varsidhi. When he touches students and compliments them, they fall under its power. He praises student-athlete Mark Truman's running ability, which causes Mark's ego to expand and his head to explode all over the locker room.
10. What is the meaning of the triangular tattoo which appears on the anterior forearm of Sparrow Donovan and certain other students?

Answer: they are possessed by the Guardian

Christine Powell, Candace's mother, recruits kids for the youth group at Lady of the Lake Church. The Guardian marks them with this tattoo and they become his obedient minions. She kidnaps Sparrow- the Guardian (sitting in the back seat of Christine's car) converts him involuntarily.
