Guidelines for Animals

Here are some ground rules for submitting a quiz here.

First of all, please play some games in this category before you attempt to write a quiz. Before writing a quiz, check the appropriate subcategory for your quiz. If any quizzes in that subcategory have the same subject as yours, please look them over before writing your quiz, as quizzes with duplicative questions will be rejected.

Please check your spelling, grammar, punctuation and facts BEFORE you submit your quiz. Quizzes with significant errors will be rejected! Do not write in all caps or all lower-case letters, and do not use Internet/chatroom abbreviations anywhere in your quiz. All sentences must start with a capital and end with appropriate punctuation.

Please note that we follow the following guideline for the capitalization of animal names:
From "Merriam-Webster Concise Handbook for Writers":
"The common names of animals and plants are not capitalized unless they contain a proper noun as a separate element, in which case the proper noun is capitalized, but any element of the name following the proper noun is lowercased. Elements of the name preceding the proper noun are usually but not always capitalized....In references to specific breeds, as distinguished from the animals that belong to the breed, all elements of the name are capitalized."
Some examples of properly capitalized names, using these guidelines:
blue whale
cardinal
South African crowned crane
Newfoundland
Some examples of improperly capitalized names, using these guidelines:
Blue Whale
Cardinal
South African Crowned Crane
newfoundland

Note that the first word of any scientific name should be capitalized, but succeeeding words should not. Examples of correct capitalization:
Felis catus
Canis lupus pallipes

Please make sure that all of your answers have a factual basis and aren't personal opinion.

Please avoid questions that ask about heights, weights, dates, lifespans, or other numerical data. These questions are very boring to players who must guess at them, and can almost always be replaced by more interesting questions. They are also often disputed. Quizzes with numerical questions will probably be rejected. NOTE This does not mean that you should write out all numbers as words. It means don't ask any questions about numbers!

Please do not include entertainment-related questions on general animal quizzes; only use them if they are relevant to a particular topic (such as the life of Lassie.)

Please remember that personal questions (such as "What is my cat's name?) and filler questions (such as "Did you like this quiz?") are not allowed. We do expect you to do some research and write real questions- extremely simple questions like "What is man's best friend?", "Can cats run fast?", and "Do tigers eat meat?" are not allowed.

If you are writing a quiz that includes country or organization specific information, such as any quiz on showing animals, or any quiz that mentions the standard for a given breed, please include the country/organization in every relevant question.

Fill-in-the blank questions can have only ONE possible answer, and questions with two or more possibilities will be rejected.

This category requires interesting information for all questions.. Personal opinion is not interesting info, nor should the info repeat the question or the answer.

First-time quizwriters are urged to write 10-question quizzes, not longer ones.

Please be aware that copying ANY material from any source, online or offline, is plagiarism and is not tolerated. Everything on your quiz MUST be in your own words.

Please submit only one quiz per day to this category.

This category is about real animals (or portrayals of real animals). Quizzes on Beanie Babies, etc. belong in Hobbies.

No scrambled word quizzes are accepted in this category.

Please do not write or submit a quiz until you have played a few games and are familiar with Quiz Creation Guidelines.
