Emboldened by scalar's #88617, can anybody find a Reader's Digest article of about the same vintage (40's-50's) about the lack of true communication in social conversation? It's a hilarious but telling account that tracks the circles in which the individuals in a particular gathering spoke. Everything reminded each person of his one train of thought that he kept interjecting. No one minded, because no one was listening. Of course, back then, RD almost exclusively REPRINTED articles, so it would have appeared elsewhere first. And, no, I'm not that old!
