It's pretty self-explanatory, showing a progression in maturity and understanding.
1. I wished life would be fun, fun, fun.
2. It turned out to be work, work, work.
3. When I applied myself to work, I found satisfaction in it.
Except it's not just work like in drudgery, but work like in helping others and in being useful.
Here's the quote from the great Tagore, along with a similar but shallower one from the inveterate playboy, Byron.
"I slept and dreamt that life was beauty; I woke and found that life was duty."
George Byron
"I slept and dreamt that life was joy. I awoke and saw that life was service. I acted and behold, service was joy."
Rabindranath Tagore
