The late Gonzo journalist Hunter S.Thompson had the title doctor before his name. Did he receive a doctoral degree, or is it just a fake title?

According to Wikipedia, Thompson did not complete high school. While running unsuccessfully for sheriff of Pitkin County, Colorado, he published an article in Rolling Stone magazine under the byline "Dr. Hunter S. Thompson (Candidate for Sheriff)," which was apparently a misrepresentation.
