Why is Poirot sometimes referred to as 'Mr Poirot' by the other characters in the Christie novels, but sometimes it is written 'M. Poirot'?

M is the abbreviation for Monsieur, the French for Mister. As Poirot was Belgian (French speaking) reference to him would be M. Poirot, but English speaking characters would probably use Mister.
