As of 2022, none of the original twelve companies remains part of the index. This is what happened to them:
- American Cotton Oil Company is now part of Unilever
- American Sugar Refining Company became Domino Sugar in 1900 (now Domino Foods)
- American Tobacco Company was broken up in a 1911 antitrust action
- Chicago Gas Company was bought by Peoples Gas Light in 1897
- Distilling & Cattle Feeding Company is now Millennium Chemicals
- General Electric is still in operation as of June 2022 but has been removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 2018
- Laclede Gas Company became Spire Inc. and has been removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1899
- National Lead Company, now NL Industries, removed from the Dow Jones Industrial Average in 1916
- North American Company was broken up by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) in 1946
- Tennessee Coal, Iron and Railroad Company was bought by U.S. Steel in 1907
- United States Leather Company dissolved in 1952
- United States Rubber Company changed its name to Uniroyal in 1961 and merged with Goodrich Corporation in 1986
