In a nutshell, IATA codes are based on the name of an airport or its city, while ICAO codes are four-letter codes identifying airports using a regional systematic pattern. The first two letters identify the country, the last two are geographically specific. For example, London Heathrow (LHR in the IATA system) has an ICAO code of EGGL. So any code starting EG will be located in the UK.
