Why does William Shakespeare's headstone contain a curse?

To scare off anyone who might try and rob his grave. The curse reads:

"Good friend for Jesus sake forbeare,
To dig the dust enclosed here.
Blessed be the man that spares these stones,
And cursed be he that moves my bones."

While the curse is taken seriously today, it appears that someone has still stolen poor Shakesphere's skull!
