The largest human gene goes by the initials DMD. It is found on the 'X' chromosome and contains some 2.4 million base pairs. It codes a protein called dystrophin.

Dystrophin is found in the heart (cardiac muscle) and in skeletal muscles used for movement. This protein protects and strengthens muscle fibres.
