Baillie's painting is a fiction. It supposedly depicts the surrender at Yorktown by defeated Lord Cornwallis who surrenders his sword to General Washington. The reality is somewhat different: Cornwallis chose not to attend! Instead, he claimed illness and left General Charles O'Hara in charge of the British forces. Washington would only accept Cornwallis's sword, so he appointed General Benjamin Lincoln to receive O'Hara's.
