If a club signs France midfielder xxx, does it mean he is a French international player, as opposed to French midfielder, which just refers to his nationality?

While there is no hard and fast rule written in a dictionary, the usage at Wikipedia supports this difference. Naming the country as a noun implies a national squad player.
