The Hornbostel-Sachs system classifies musical instruments based on how they make sounds and are classified into 5 categories. Idiophones are percussion instruments by hitting, shaking, or scraping. The next are membranophones which use a membrane to make sound like a snare drum. Chordophones make sounds by vibrating strings. Aerophones vibrate the air as in horns. Finally, electrophones make sounds by electrical means.
