824 times with the first time being in 1199! It is played every year on Shrove Tuesday. The rules are relatively simple as whoever has possession at the two-hour mark is declared the winner. Injuries are common as the large crowd crushes each other to try and get their hands on the heavy ball weighing 4 pounds. It sounds nuts to me! The prize is 10 pounds to the winner.
