Have never heard that Old Wives tale but have heard it with regard to eating Oysters (oysters being at their best in the months of May, June, July, August when there is not an R in the month).

I too have only heard it about oysters and can only assume that if you eat pork (I assume not cured pork) when there isn't an r in the month it more likely to go bad - in the olden days of old wives tales when there were no freezers etc.

As the daughter of a pork butcher back in the fifties when refrigeration was not as good as it is nowadays, pork sales fell in the summer months because pork went 'off' faster than all other meats.
