Peterborough was in the county 'The Soke of Peterborough' from 1885 to 1965. In 1965, the Soke combined with Huntingdonshire to form the county 'Huntingdonshire and Peterborough'.In 1974 this new county became part of Cambridgeshire. Peterborough has not to my knowlege and belief ever formed part of Northamptonshire.

As a Northamtonshire lad, with relatives in Peterborough, I was always lead to believe that IT WAS - at least until 1965 - but with a sort of 'special relationship'. The site below seems to confirm that. Quote: For 900 years the Soke of Peterborough was part of Northamptonshire. Bounded by the rivers Welland and Nene (on the north and south respectively) it extended from Wittering in the west to Eye in the east. The Soke of Peterborough was special because of the extent of legal powers which the Abbot of Peterborough once exercised over {it;} some of these powers eventually passed to the Marquises of Exeter and so when legislation, which was to create County Councils, was debated in the House of Commons in 1888, the then Marquess moved an amendment that the Soke should be a County Council separate from the County of Northampton. Thus the Soke of Peterborough County Council came into being in {1889;} it was not entirely autonomous however, and remained nominally part of Northamptonshire until 1965. http://www.peterborough.gov.uk/council/libraries/libraryguides/guide.html

I agree with Barrow Boy on this, although I think it is a fact that the Soke of Peterborough was usually bracketed with Northamptonshire. When I began my working career my first job was to address letters and I distictly recall that for postal purposes at any rate, Peterborough was reckoned to be in Northants.
