There seems to be some confusion to whether it was a turtle or a tortoise as web sites vary. The following is from http://www.seacave.com/excerpt.html
Another famous turtle was Tui Malila. Legends described it as a giant Galapagos land tortoise which was given by Captain James Cook to the Queen of Tonga in 1773 or 1777. It finally expired on May 19, 1966.

According to my info, SM, it was a giant turtle
presented to Cook by the KIng of Tonga.

Yes it appears that anybody researching this would have to make a decision between: -
a) Turtle and Tortoise
b)'given' and 'received' and
c)the King or Queen of Tonga.
There is enough web sites that would support each permutation.
