Who was the first hockey player to sign a million dollar contract?

    Question #44517. Asked by woody156. (Feb 20 04 8:53 PM)

Bobby Orr of the Bruins signed a contract for 200K per year for 5 years, so his was the first million dollar contract.

Bobby Hull and Derek Sanderson each signed large contracts in 1972 when they jumped to the WHA. Hull was paid 2.75Million a year with 1 Million dollars up front, so he was the first player to receive a million all at once. Sanderson played only a few games before returning to the NHL, so he never made his millions...at least not at that time.
