First cousins share a grandparent. Second cousins share a great grandparent. First cousin once removed share a common ancestor who is one's grandparent but the other's great grandparent (such as your cousin's son). The general trick to remember is, cousins are all of the same generation. When the next generation comes around you start using the "removed" bit. First cousins indeed share a grandparent. For every generation back the common ancestor goes, you add another digit to the "n" in "nth cousins". Well, another thing to remember is that most people do not know who their third or fourth cousins are, let alone any more distant relations than that.
