Why is a wren called a Jennie?

Question #54846. Asked by mochyn. (Feb 05 05 2:45 PM)

It was one of many personal names given to birds in the middle ages. The 'JACKdaw' was originally a 'daw', and the 'MAGpie' a 'pie'. Robin and martin are two other names which ended up as birds' names. So it was in the same way that the JENNY wren got her name.
