Ilona Ritter is correct, John responded by calling Stewart "Phyllis".
John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight, he devised his stage name in Elton Hercules John in 1967 when pianst in the band Bluesology. He combined the band's sax player Elton Dean's and singer Long John Baldry's first names for his new name, Elton John.
He chose the middle name 'Hercules' for himself, not after the hero of mythology, but after the horse named Hercules on the British TV sitcom "Steptoe and Son" (the the basis for America's "Sanford and Son")
