There is a magic number, around 6 digits long (I can't remember exactly) and when you add, multiply, subtract and divide parts of it (or something like that) it does amazing stuff. Sorry I can't be more specific, I don't remember myself. What is this number?

    Question #80295. Asked by auccl799. (May 12 07 8:19 PM)

It is difficult to know quite what you are looking for with that description.
The 6-digit cyclic number 142,857 is quite unusual in that:
    142,857 x 2 = 285,714
    142,857 x 3 = 428,571
    142,857 x 4 = 571,428
    142,857 x 5 = 714,285
    142,857 x 6 = 857,142
    142,857 x 7 = 999,999
    Also 142 + 857 = 999.
    The square of 142,857 = 20,408,122,449 and...
    20,408 + 122,449 = 142,857.

All these facts relate to it being the recurring part of 1/7 as a decimal, but I'll let you find out why...

Take any positive whole number not greater than 50. If the number is even, divide it by two. If the number is odd, multiply it by 3, and add 1 to the result. Apply the same method to the resulting number, and continue in this way forming a chain of numbers untill you finally arrive at the number 1.Shown below is a chain of numbers that results from this method if you begin with 15: 15 - 46 - 23 - 70 - 35 - 106 - 53 - 160 - 80 - 40 - 20 - 10 - 5 - 16 - 8 - 4 - 2 - 1. As you can see, the number 15 requires 17 steps to end up at 1. Of the numbers not greater then 50, which takes the longest to reach the number 1?

The number 1920212223...939495 consists of 154 digits, and was arrived at by placing the numbers from 19 to 95 one after the other. If I now remove 95 of the digits in such a way that the resulting number is the greatest possible, what are the first digits of the 59-digit number that remains?

Does anyone remember an Australian TV show in the 1960's called The Magic Boomerang? I was very young and I remember it as a favourite, but I can't remember who was in it, or much else about it. Can any of you Aussie Baby Boomers jolt your memories for me?
