Wanderer above the Sea of Fog
By Caspar David Friedrich
Author Award for November 2023
Perhaps no words better describe the mood of "Wanderer above the Sea of Fog" than those of the artist himself when he says, "The artist should paint not only what he has in front of him but also what he sees inside himself." Indeed, due to the numerous similarities to the artist himself (such as the red hair), many art historians believe it is a self-portrait, though Friedrich has never confirmed this.
Though the painting is now famous as a prime example of German Romanticism, it wasn't regarded as a masterpiece in his lifetime. It took until well into the 20th century for the painting to reach its acclaimed status.
