Composition with Large Red Plane

By Piet Mondrian

Author Award for August 2023

Piet Mondrian's early abstract paintings were titled quite literally and quite lengthily. That can easily be evidenced by this painting, with its full title of "Composition with Large Red Plane, Yellow, Black, Gray and Blue." Mondrian's works became a sensation in the early 1920s with the artist deciding to stick to what he called the three primary colors (red, blue, and yellow) and the three primary values (white, black, and gray), all of which can be found in this painting.

In creating his abstract works, Mondrian didn't simply draw lines, add some color, and call it a day; the patterns were meticulously deliberated. For example, each abstract piece is asymmetrical, so as not to appear too artificial.
