I got my cat from in front of the grocery store where a kid was giving them away. The other 3 are her kids. My snake was a gift from my friends, I came home from work one day and they said "Hi, here.". One dog is a kid of my mom's dog and the other the breeder hates and she fights with mom's dog so she lives with me. Reply #1. Jul 30 09, 12:48 PM |

"Twitch"......senior cat.......14 yrs old, "temporary" resident whilst owner in hospital a few days.........been here ever since. "Callie"......ex-feral, found on building site, was in animal rescue centre for 3 years but nobody would home her because she was feral..we did. Been with us 12 years. "Sharna"....was orphan kitten, mother run over by car, hand reared in rescue centre. Now 10 years old and still called "the kitten". "Gemini".......semi-feral, had 6 homes in 6 months, had kittens taken from her when too young.....now 10 years old. "Leo" (and "Freya" who died 3 years ago), ex rescue kittens...now 8 years old. "Jemima & Donald" (+ two unnamed offspring, "Ermitrude & Francis"...........wild Mallard Ducks that decided our garden was a good place to raise a family. Reply #2. Jul 31 09, 8:41 AM |

Strange pet names. They are nice names, but I have never heard of them before. Reply #3. Jul 31 09, 11:55 AM |

Anabanana..........."Twitch" came with that name, so called because her tail was (still is) always "twitching" and never still. "Callie"...........simply a Calico cat! "Sharna........my wife's choice, no idea why! "Gemini"......like my wife, she is "Gemini" too! "Leo".........The only tom, "King of the Pride". Ducks........"Jemima"...from a character in a Beatrice Potter book "Jemima Puddleduck". "Donald"...Donald Duck. "Ermitrude"......character from childrens TV programme in 1960's called "Magic Roundabout" and whilst the character in programme was a pink cow, somehow suited a Brown Duck in my opinion! "Francis"...being a Drake...."Francis Drake". Reply #4. Aug 01 09, 1:41 AM |

"Rudi", 9 year old German Shepherd, was bred by us. He was the runt of a litter of nine and nobody wanted him. "Kimber", 5 year old German Shepherd, was bought from a home breeder as a replacement for Rudi's mum after she died of cancer. Reply #9. Aug 01 09, 11:03 PM |

We got our border collie Millie from a wonderful shelter called North Shore Animal League. It's a no-kill shelter located on Long Island, and has been much in the news lately because it rescued over 250 dogs from puppy mills. Anton is right. Pet stores are evil because they're in it for the money and not for the benefit of the animals. You're much more likely to get a healthy pet from a good shelter than from a pet store or a breeder. At North Shore they never release a dog or cat for adoption until it's been neutered or spayed, has had all its shots, and deemed to be healthy enough for adoption. Because they're outside the city, they have a lot of space and they have a nice dog run in the back yard, and volunteers who walk and play with the dogs so that they don't have to spend all day in the cage. If you go to their website, www.nsala.org, you'll see so many wonderful animals waiting for homes, you'll want to adopt them all. They have purebred and mixed dogs of all kinds. Reply #10. Patsy we have a lot in common. Both part of NYC (Staten Island) and I got my border collie from the shelter mine being the animal care and control facility in SI. I couldn't have gotten a better dog if it were bred by 2 champions. Healthy, smart, loyal just a great dog Reply #11. Aug 03 09, 1:42 PM |

Yeah. Pet stores ARE evil! I just remembered that every pet I have got from a pet store has died mysteriously! How strange! Reply #12. Aug 03 09, 3:21 PM |

Grissy our cat was rescued by some friends from Spain. They paid for his passport and his innoculations and hoped to find hime a home. We were only too happy to have him. Our previous cat, Winston, had just died. Reply #13. Aug 03 09, 4:26 PM |

spider, I shudder to think what might have happened to your beautiful border collie if you hadn't come along and adopted him/her. The Center for Animal Care and Control is a kill shelter, although to their credit, they try to transfer as many dogs as possible to non-kill shelters. We were actually looking for a terrier, because we had lost our beloved wire-haired terrier Rusty a few months before. We looked at all the shelters in Manhattan but couldn't find the right dog. Then we saw a beautiful wheaten terrier on the North Shore website. By the time we got there, the terrier had been adopted, but Millie and her two sisters had just come in the day before. She was just this little 8-week-old furball, but she looked at us and it was love at first sight. We think that she came from a breeder who couldn't sell all his puppies and donated three of them to North Shore. All three of them were adopted on the first day. She is two and a half now, and she's just the most amazing dog. She's famous for being the friendliest dog in the neighborhood. We can't walk down the street without people stopping us to pet her. No one believes we got her from a shelter. Of course border collies need a lot of exercise, and she goes to the dog run every day for at least an hour. Good exercise for us too, because it's half a mile there and half a mile back every day. We think we were very lucky to have been at North Shore on that day, and I strongly recommend that if anyone is looking for a dog or cat, you search the shelters first, and help put the puppy mills out of business. My dog came from PAWS animal shelter in Lynnwood, Washington. My cat was a blood donor at my vet school for 10 years, and was also used for students to practice palpating cats. She is past the age for giving blood and is enjoying a well deserved retirement. I do think she misses her favorite pastime of walking on everyone's keyboards in the student lounge, though. Both of the cats that I currently have (Garfield and Blackie) come from a no-kill animal rescue centre. Reply #16. Aug 05 09, 11:16 AM |

Cinco belonged to my neighbor and crawled over to my place across the second floor balcony and when I tried to give him back to my neighbor, he tried to claim the cat came from my balcony. My neighbor didn't realize I lived next door, and did quite a lot of back pedalling when he realized I was his neighbor and the cat wasn't mine. Peeper was born in my backyard (yes, I had moved by then) from one of the numerous feral cats we had back then. And named so because she doesn't meow - she makes strange peeping noises. Rayne (another cat) was abandoned in the rain, in December, in the rainwater ditch next to where I work. Reply #17. Aug 05 09, 10:05 PM |

I found our cat abandoned in a park while I was hiking. Our older dog was rescued by my husband from his neglectful roommate. Our younger dog was found wandering around by a family, but they couldn't keep her, so they contacted the pit bull group I belong to. We adopted her after seeing her photo and visiting with her. I got my 2 cats from the shelter, I feel giving an animal who was put in a shelter a good home is rewarding. A lot of animals that are in shelters are sometimes destroyed, and that makes me sad. When I go there and see the animals in cages,I feel I want to adopt all of them, but I know I can't. Reply #20. Aug 20 09, 7:27 PM |
