Subject: How is your dog at the vet?

Posted by: TheRambler

Our dog is absolutely terrified and it's because he had a really bad experience at the emergency vets, when he was very young. The female vet had no time for him being frightened and just stuck this needle in to his neck and the liquid came flying out the other side. She really did hurt him and he's never forgotten. We had to take him just the other day because he has cysts on his paw. He was howling and shaking from head to foot. We tried to comfort him as best we could but to no avail. Has anyone got any advice as to how to make the visit a bit more pleasant for him and us?

Try talking to the staff and see if you can take him in at a quiet time to just sit there for a few minutes. The staff making a fuss and possibly giving him a treat may help. It's all about geting him to see that the vets isn't a nasty place after all. It may be a slow process, but stick with it. After a time, when he's happy to sit in the waiting room try taking him in to the treatment room for a few seconds at a time.
If your vet is as good as mine I'm sure they'll want to help. It'll make their life a bit easier after all.

And before anyone chips in to say I'm going against site rules, I'm not giving out medical advice. This is an animal behaviour problem, not a medical one.

My Newfie will crawl as far in my lap as is possible. She's not interested in treats or cats at the vet she just wants me to hold onto her and make them go away. My Lab mix is pretty well behaved. He won't go far but he doesn't panic like she does. When I took Mom's Newf puppy in for kennel cough, they examined him outside and he tried to crawl under the car. No real bad behaviors but they really don't like to go to the vets.

I'll try that RMG but he's just not keen on strangers either. He's like a little kid with us but if a stranger pats him or offers him a biscuit, he growls. I think it's because he's just not used to a lot of people being around. He's fine with our neighbours and our friends though. You're right, I would have to make a point of taking him to the vet, possibly once a week or something and just sitting there for a while, just to let him see that it's not all bad. Thanks for the advice.

My old boy, Rudi, is due to have an MRI scan in Devizes on Tuesday morning. If anyone is available to show us around whilst we wait we would appreciate a bit of company.

I hope Rudi got on ok. My dog id terrified going to the vet, if I am even walking past the surgery, he will nearly pull me into the middle of next week!

Rudi was fine. His usual laid back self. He's normally very calm and takes whatever the vet does to him, even when it hurts a bit he hardly complains. The scan results are going to be seen by a specialist and they'll let us know in a day or so.

Our 5 months old pup doesn't know much about the vet yet, apart from having his shots. Our middle dog doesn't like going there much but doesn't make a fuss. Our eldest dog, though (she is 11 y o), trembles as soon as she realises where she is going and is so scared she almost collapses on the vet's floor. She is facing surgery in the near future to have some mammary tumours removed so I suppose that will reinforce her fear.

jensetter, I hope it all goes well. I know only too well how you will feel when you leave her at the surgery.

Thank you, RMG.

Rambler. Our middle dog got badly underweight a couple of years ago and we took her to the vet every week to weigh her on their super-duper digital weighing machine. Maybe that is why she doesn't make a fuss, knowing that a visit to the vet is not necessarily unpleasant.

Thanks there Jensetter, that's a good idea. I really need to do something as Maxx gets so frightened. The thing is, once he walks out the door, he is back to his old self.
