Subject: Pet Names

Posted by: MsKreant

I just adopted two Ragdoll cats. They are one and two years old - a blue bicolor and a lynx point. They currently have human like names, but I would like to change that. I cannot decide between a literary / or historical theme, or perhaps one that reflects their personality and/ or appearance.

The bicolor is serene and regal, the lynx point is a bit timid and a chatterbox. They are both females.

Any ideas cat names?

We have 4 cats. They are named: Ozzy, after Ozzy Osbourne. Tank, because he was even big as a kitten. Scary-Spice, Tank's mother. She is/was feral and learned to trust us and now has lived indoors for about 5 years, but she still is a wee shy. Our newest little one is about eight months old and started coming around the house a couple of months ago. He wanted in and would not take no for an answer. He is all black. We call him Toothless, because he reminds us of the dragon in the film, "How to Train Your Dragon". Oxymoron though, because he is very toothy. :^). We lost our eighteen year old manx two years ago. Her name was Trickster. My neice named her.

Most of my cats in the past 30+ years have been rescues. Just kick back for a week or so, MsKreant, and enjoy your new pets. As you observe their behaviors, names will just pop in to your head. If the name doesn't seem to fit immediately, it WILL later on.

Many years ago, I adopted a runt kitten, and had to plead with my erstwhile husband (who was "sure" he didn't like cats) to let me keep it. This kitten was so tiny, he fit in the palm of my small hand. I told hubby that if we could keep the kitten, I'd name if after his drum kit. So, the little kitty (which looked like a miniature Maine coon cat) became known as 'Ludwig Von Zildjian'. Oddly enough, it turned out later that "Ludy" not only had rhythm, but he had definitive tastes in music, and also had PERFECT PITCH!
Unbelievable! My band mates got the biggest kick out of this! Ludwig's favorites were Supertramp's Crime of the Century Album, and anything Mozart.

I took one of my cat's names by the personality he exhibited. This cat, also rescued as a kitten, had been dubbed "Maynard" by the staff. That name certainly didn't fit him. The little one flashed across a room like he was on rocket fuel. I mentioned to my roommate one evening, "Geez, that cat is loaded with turbo-tude!" Turbo became his name, and is the inspiration for my FT user name.

Names for your adorable ragdoll cats will just come to you.....no need for research or worry!

Wow! Thank you for the help everyone.

I think that I should wait a bit to be sure to pick a name that suits them

I love the stories about how your cats got their names.

Turbotude, I have a friend whose actualy legal first name was that of the family dog. Lucky for her, the dog was named Kim.

We have 4 cats:-

"Twitch" , a tabby cat, looked after for a friend for a while and whom sort of decided to stay.............now 16 years old.

"Sharna" (aka "The Mitten") dark-tortoiseshell came to us as an orphaned kitten.....totally "mummies cat" (I am merely tolerated).....now 12 years old.

"Gemini", all black except for tan stripe, ex-rescue cat, now 12 years old.

"Leo", silver tabby, ex-feral........8 years old.

Those passed away.........."Calico" , a calico cat - ok not very original name! Ex-feral, died aged 15.

"Freya", a "reverse Tuxedo" (mostly all white but with bit of black).......sister of "Leo".......died aged 5.

"Rufus".......ginger kitten, ex-feral, died aged 3 months.

I love the stories of how you named your pets also.

I remember Freya from a fairy tale read or was told as a child. I believe it was a horse's name, in that story.

When I first moved out of Houston to this more rural location, I was so hungry to have a dog again that I told the new neighbors to watch for one, and quickly had 9---yes nine. All of which I named, got their shots and had spayed or nuetered.

Then, after this pack had kept me awake all night barking I found out what the fuss was at daylight. They had treed two kittens! A white one with blue eyes, and what I describe as a long-haired Siamese. I couldn't watch my murdering pack of mixed breeds kill those babies, so I got a ladder and seemed to climb up a very tall pine tree and got them. With the help of my then husband.

I had never really had cats. They were so cute. I must have had more money then, because I took them to my vet. He said they were weaned and did the shots. Whitey and Brownie lived to a ripe old age in my home. There was never a question of "Did the cat get out?" Because they would have been killed by my dogs. But I had zero names left to be imaginative with their names.

So my eyes were opened to the Cat World. I really loved them and they taught me alot. They passed on within weeks of each other at about 15 years old.

I had to rehome some of my dogs. Nine was really impossible. But because they were so well taken care of and had all their shots etc. I had no trouble. Only trouble was choosing who would stay or go.

There you have my cat story.

My very first cat that I raised from a kitten was a pure white. I named him Snowball. The cat that I have now was given to me by a friend who wanted to get rid of her. Her name is Midnight, but if I could name her myself I probably Melody. Whatever you call your pets, make sure you find out if they are male or female so that you don't give them the wrong name.

Great posts, everyone! MsKreant.....the names will never be as important as the love you feel for these two kitties! Relax and just enjoy them. Maybe sometime you'll post a picture of them??

I have a cat that is a bit of a prissy girl so I named her Miss Kitty. (Always reminds me of Gunsmoke when I call her.)

I was thinking of famous cats:

Duchess Babe
Sassie Homeward Bound
Binx Hocus Pocus (Although Binx was male)
Dinah Alice in Wonderland

One of my registered Shelties, many years ago. I bought from a breeder. They have "rules" to the official registered name, you can call the dog what you like. The breeder was a wonderful person. hen I got the dog, dumb me asked what her name was. The breeder said "I just call her Sugar".

So not knowing the rules I called her Sugar too. But when it came time to register the official name---uh oh.

But the lady was pleased with my final official name, Sweet Promise of Springtime, call name Sugar. Springtime was the kennel name.

She looked just like a half-sized version of Lassie.

I loved her, but as a matter of priniciple I will only have rescue dogs now

My 3 and half year old white and black chihuahua is named Abbey Rhode after my favorite Beatles album. I was listening to "She Came in through the Bathroom Window" as I was driving home from the breeders. She wasnt even one pound yet!

How about a couple of these names?

Nova, Honeybee, Vixen, Oriana, Minerva, Lady, Elsa, Melody, Nevada, Tinsel, Mystic, Calamity, Sphinx, Aquarius, Ozone, Zodiac.

If it was me, I'd choose Sphinx & Tinsel.

My cats have always been named after Shakespearean characters; the dogs have always been given a name that seems to fit their personality.

We're down to one 13 yr old Siamese, and as someone else mentioned, there are rules about names of registered animals. I named him Cassius after the Julius Caesar character, and my husband picked his other two. He thinks he's clever, so.....since he loves Muhammad Ali, and here in Georgia the soil is heavy red clay, the cat is:
Cassius Georgia Clay

A couple of years ago we accepted a 3 year old Ragdoll cat from the previous owners who had named him of all things "Bronson" Now I could understand that name on a Rottweiller or a German Shepherd dog, but a dainty (as I thought) Ragdoll cat, no way! So I renamed him "Bronni" to which he readily answered. Then I learnt two things about him, firstly he eats for Australia, his appetite is insatiable, and secondly that he has not read the rule book on Ragdolls. He is far from dainty or laid back, and is a real scrapper and is always ready for a rough and tumble with the other cats. But we love him anyway.

Well, a tabby laid kittens in my house a few weeks ago. Her mate also accompanies her to guard the three female kittens. Their lames are -
Sire cat - Zeus Grace
Dam cat - Euronyme Grace
Kitten 1 - Thalia Grace
Kitten 2 - Euphrosyne Grace
Kitten 3 - Aeglia Grace

As the leader of the myth loving team of Mythic Mythologies,
I recommend you to name the aggressive one as Sekhmet and the timid one as Bast.
