As a kid I used to turn over logs and rocks looking for interesting critters. I once proudly caught what I thought was a large, purple snake (it actually was a legless lizard, I think). Reply #2. Aug 12 12, 12:02 PM |

One time, something got into our house. I thought it was a mouse, but after I caught it in a catch & release type trap, I looked at it closely. It was a small mole! How it got inside our house, I'll never know! Reply #3. Aug 12 12, 3:57 PM |

My son and I used to go out hunting for reptiles and amphibians, and we sometimes got lucky and found a glass lizard. They're such cool animals, and they really do feel like they are made of glass. They'll poop on you when you catch them, so watch out LOL. Reply #4. Aug 15 12, 7:28 PM |

Recently, I managed to catch a sand crab by the beach. Difficult because those critters scuttle extremely quickly, and stay in their holes if you try to wait at one. Reply #5. Aug 16 12, 7:54 AM |

I was doing some lawn work recently and gently scooped up a beautiful legless lizard about 18", but not a pretty purple like the one nautilator had. Florida is great for finding critters all over the state. Reply #6. Aug 19 12, 12:20 AM |

I saw something at night which looked like a fox, but was slightly larger and with a very thin, tufted tail. Reply #7. Aug 19 12, 1:02 AM |

Could be a coyote, doublemm? We have foxes and coyotes in northeast CT., and a nasty looking critter called a fishercat, which is in the weasel family. Caught some Tile fish {pronounced tallyfish} in FL, and they were one of the best fish I've ever tasted - nice white meat like sole or flounder, but bigger chunks. Reply #8. Aug 23 12, 11:27 AM |

I don't think so, Alexis - it was not that large (not to mention I saw it in the North West of England ;)). I'm starting to think it was just a fox with a dodgy tail. Reply #9. Aug 23 12, 3:07 PM |

Last thing over the fence - happened to one of our cats, so tail remained bent. Reply #10. Aug 23 12, 3:35 PM |

My mom caught a cat in our backyard a few years ago... but I'm allergic to them. Unfortunately, they're my favorite animals. Reply #11. Oct 27 12, 9:07 AM |

My husband caught a skunk in our cat trap. He was really trying to catch a possum who had been raiding our henhouse. Reply #12. Oct 27 12, 10:21 AM |

I never caught one, but the scariest - and ugliest - thing I ever saw was a coconut crab. One fell out of a tree and almost landed on me once: http://www.jaunted.com/story/2008/8/24/11482/0347/travel/Good+News+for+Coconut+Crabs%3A+U.S.+to+Protect+Three+Pacific+Island+Chains These things are not only incredibly ugly, they're big, and aggressive! I was a very young child living in Florida. I happily found a lovely branch on a tree in our backyard. When I brought it into our kitchen, my mother very quietly complemented me on my find, and directed me to put it back outside. It was a huge "walking stick" bug...ICK! ;-) Reply #14. Years ago, when we were much younger, my husband liked to snorkel. I would stay in a small rubber boat, I wasn't much of a swimmer. We would go out several hundred yards from shore and he would bring back shells and sharks teeth. One time he brought up a beautiful conch shell. It was about the size of a tennis ball. While I was looking at it, a small octopus poked its head out. I gave it to hubby to put back on the sea floor. This happened in the Gulf of Mexico off of Sarasota, FL. Reply #16. You sure it was an octopus and not just a conch? :) They are also soft-bodied creatures with a "foot" living in those shells. Things I've caught....I'm a critter person, so I've caught a lot of things. Probably the coolest thing was a hummingbird though. :) Reply #17. Dec 14 12, 10:11 PM |

When I was a little boy, two or three, my mom said I came to the back door with what I said was a big worm. She told me "Thats nice Jon, now let it go." She told me later it was a garter snake half as long as I was tall. She said she thought it was a garter snake anyway. Reply #18. Feb 04 13, 7:38 AM |
