How exciting! I'll have to send a heads-up to my friend in Melbourne, though I'm sure the news has gotten through to her somehow already. Perhaps she can make a visit.

Also, it's been announced that the Zoo's first-born calf, Mali, will soon have a baby brother or sister with mother, Dokkoon, expecting her 2nd calf in November.

UPDATE: Our new little elephant finally has a name! He's been called Sanook which, in Thai, means "fun-loving & cheerful".

Fantastic news, everybody! Vets at Melbourne Zoo have started monitoring Dokkoon, who's due to give birth to her 2nd calf some time in the next 3 to 4 weeks. Very exciting!

Just heard some terrible news. Sanook was found dead this morning. Keepers still aren't sure what happened but have said there were no signs of any trauma. More details as they emerge.

The elephants like to play with tyres suspended from ropes around their enclosure and it's just been announced that Sanook died from strangulation after getting his head trapped in one.

Dokkoon's new baby is finally here so I've added a new thread, 'Some joy among the sadness' to celebrate.
