Not a very complete list, greyhounds aren't there, so I'm none the wiser. Darcy is probably about 6 months old when it's time for a walk, and 93 the rest of the time! Reply #2. May 25 13, 4:43 AM |

Well I read that site that was quoted and I think it is a load of old Cobs. Average life expectancy for cats 12.1 years ??? Someone had better tell my 18 year old, my 19 year old and my 15 year old cats I am sure they would love to know that. And the dog list is inconclusive and does not cover very many breeds at all. Our Rhodesian Ridgeback just passed away at the age of 16 - I wonder what that was supposed to have made her in dog years? Reply #3. May 25 13, 5:05 AM |

I know greyhounds have a life expectancy of around 13. I know of one couple who adopted an 11 year old from kennels, intending to give him a nice couple of years snoozing by the fire. He eventually checked out at the age of 18! Set against that are the ones that get lymphoma, bone cancer and the like and die way before the age of 13, so I suppose that's how they arrive at an average figure. Reply #4. May 25 13, 5:27 AM |

Like Mommakat, I have had many cats. Only one died before the age of 12, and that was in his first year, due to kidney disease. All the others lived well past 12, with several living to 18 or 19. One even lived to be 21. Reply #5. May 25 13, 7:52 AM |

Well Postcards you are absolutely correct and I hate to tell you this - not being competitive really - but we have had a couple go to 22. I think it all comes down to how well they are looked after. Reply #6. May 25 13, 9:01 PM |

I have to agree. If you're thinking of getting a cat, expect it to live at least 15-16 years. We've had Siamese in the family that all lived well past 20. My daughter's boyfriend's plain old black domestic shorthair passed away at 22. He didn't always receive medical care so I think genetics plays a major part. I've owned many cats for over 50 years and have only had two who died young (a 4 year old due to a massive stroke and an 8 year old with feline leukemia, pre-vaccine era). I think a dog's lifespan is generally a bit more predictable. None of the dogs in our family lived well beyond the average for their breed. Our collies all died around 13, their bodies gave out long before their minds. Pets never live as long as we'd like so we just have to cherish them while they're here. :) Reply #8. Yes, she is a typical example of a cat "owning us". She walked into our home in the beginning of 1996 and looked us over, we passed, and she settled in...LOL Reply #10. May 26 13, 12:57 AM |

According to that, my baby puppy Bodo, would have been about 120 (extra for being mixed) when he died at age 17. Like people, maybe pets are living longer. Reply #11. May 26 13, 6:23 AM |

My dog is a crossbreed just like pedigree dogs are but he's not recognised on the list. He's 11 years and 10 months and his dad was a Black Labrador but his mum was a mixed breed. He'll probably live longer than if he was an accepted breed, as the people responsible for their development have caused lots of pedigree dogs pain & suffering. IE: big dogs with hip dysplasia, flat faced dogs with difficulty breathing and designer handbag dogs who must lead a miserable life. My dog is 84 in human terms and he still chases rabbits and likes a swim in the river. Reply #12. Jun 01 13, 8:03 AM |

The "calculate" tab didn't work so I did the math on my calculator. I added the 1.22 years for cross breeds and Charlie would be roughly 122 years old. I once had a cat (family first found him before I was born) that lived from 1965-1987. Reply #16. Aug 22 13, 10:58 AM |
