Is it safe to assume that the only people shocked about Chicago not getting the Olympics are people from Chicago? Reply #1. Oct 02 09, 4:48 PM |

Rio is a perfect place for them. Wish I could go there. I wouldn't have cared to go to Chicago. Sorry everyone from Chicago. Reply #3. Oct 02 09, 6:25 PM |

I'm glad to see South America finally hosting an Olympic event, the U.S. has hosted a bunch of Olympic games anyway let's give someone else a shot. Reply #4. Oct 02 09, 6:31 PM |

I'm glad Chicago didn't get the Olympics, because the host city usually loses money on the deal, and Illinois is teetering on the brink of bankruptcy as it is. But I think Rio is a strange choice. One of the highest violent crime rates in the world. Reply #5. Oct 03 09, 10:15 PM |

The Olympics are getting more and more politicized. I started losing interest in the Olympics when professional basketball and ice hockey players were allowed to compete in games that are supposedly dedicated to amateur sport. Reply #7. Oct 04 09, 6:30 AM |

Cym, there are few true amateur sportspeople left these days that are good enough to compete for their countries. What they euphamistically call 'expenses' are nothing less than disguised appearence fees. Reply #8. Oct 04 09, 9:56 AM |

So was Atlanta, Daver. Athens isn't exactly clean, either. We're not going to even bring up Sarajevo. Ghetto crime rate isn't a factor for the Olympics in the slightest. Please. You want Simi Valley or Nothing Happening, Illinois to host it? Rio is awesome for the Olympics. So much more deserving than Chicago, which frankly (not to offend anyone but truth here) is a 3rd tier US city, like Cleveland or Milwaukee. Not really a world representative city. LA deserved it before Chicago. But, Rio, oh man, that is a city that goes off. One day I will get down there. I haven't been there yet but heard so many great things. South America deserved a Summer Olympics and what better a place than Rio? Reply #9. Oct 04 09, 5:58 PM |

Oh, and Daver, with the host city losing money, that might have been true before 1984, thanks to Peter Ueberroth and the LA Olympics. Thrivation going on right there. And don't blame me, if my vote was worth what it should be ;) , Ueberroth would have won the governorship of CA, not Arnie. When Ueberroth dropped out, I had to vote on the side of morals so I voted for Larry Flynt, the most moral politician in the history of the world but alas. :) But yes, going on, Chicago's mafia politics probably would have screwed everything up. Like I said above, 3rd highest population nonetheless, it's a 3rd tier city like San Diego or Pensacola. Not an Olympic city - sorry. Reply #10. Oct 04 09, 6:01 PM |

I agree that it is high time that South America got an opportunity to host the Olympics. Moreover, Rio is in better economic shape than Chicago or any US city so they can afford to host the Games. Reply #11. Oct 04 09, 6:15 PM |

Both golf and rugby union 7s have now been voted into the 2016 schedule by the IOC committee. Both sports have appeared before, but not for over 100 years. Reply #12. Oct 09 09, 9:21 AM |

Schoonie - People in Atlanta don't have to drive around in armored cars, and there aren't dozens of doctors who make their living sewing back on the ears and fingers of kidnap victims. Rio's much worse than Sarajevo. Reply #13. Oct 09 09, 2:29 PM |

Last I checked, though, Atlanta has one of the highest murder rates in the country. Well, next to DC. Really doesn't matter, though, as crime rate isn't a prerequisite to hosting an Olympics. People outside the US could just as easily claim that the US isn't deserving since we have a state-sanctioned death penalty (they probably already do, though!). Besides, every city has their respective ghettos. I think Rio is a great choice and I am sure it will be an outstanding Olympics. Reply #14. Oct 09 09, 6:58 PM |

The setting is certainly a darned sight more beautiful than Chicago, anyway! Dollars to doughnuts, hoqwever, that there'll be a massive slum clearance - it happens in every city which hosts the Olympics. Reply #15. Oct 11 09, 8:36 AM |

I'm new to this board. I just wanted to attract your attention to a call in the Author Chat Lounge. There have been only a few Olympic Games covered by funtrivia quizzes. Would anyone care to author a quiz on one of the Olympic Games? Reply #16. Nov 10 09, 12:49 PM |

Every city has bad parts, there are some wonderful parts of Rio. I was there 2 years ago and felt very safe for the most part. Cities always make an effort to 'clean up' the city before the Olympics as well. I am excited for them to be in South America, and Brazil is a great choice as they are by far the most economically stable and developed country in South America. I think it will be great, every country adds its own flair to the games and you can bet Brazil is going to come out with something different and amazing, much like China did for these last games. It's nice to have people other than Europe/US/Australia get the games! Reply #17. Nov 11 09, 8:41 AM |

I am from the Chicago suburbs and I am happy Chicago didn't get the Olympics. However, there is no way that anyone can call Chicago a third tier city - it is a world class city with world class museums, universities, restaurants, etc. I could go on and on. Just because there are stupid politicians in the state does not mean that the city is any less than it was before those politicians took office. It is the Land of Lincoln and we have a strong connection to history. Shame on you for denigrating us. Reply #18. Nov 18 09, 5:24 PM |
