This is just way too young.

Of course it is. His team mates all sound bereft. They also seem speechless (as opposed to inarticulate) and I'm not surprised.

One thing that surprised me was that he was temporarily blinded by a penalty flag thrown by an official. What on earth are people doing *throwing* flags at players?

Your sarcasm, however 'discreet' (must be a british thing). Never ceases to amaze me l.

What's wrong with a little sarcasm now & then, Boxjaw? "Sarcasm is the spice of life"! :)

It all depends upon the situation...if you are the giver of the sarcasm or the recipient.

Considering the topic is about a person, albiet a famous one, who has passed away why would sarcasm be appropriate. Not only passed away but passed away at a young age and how his friends, etc. are remembering him.

I'm not saying anyone was being sarcastic. If boxjaw felt they were, it is up to him.

Irony is one thing, sarcasm is another.

The referee did not throw it at him on purpose. He threw the flag not knowing Brown was there.

I think that Lesley had the wrong idea about the flag throwing. To us Brits, a flag would be used to mark the corners of the pitch of a football (soccer) pitch and is a piece of cloth on top of a 4 or 5 foot pole. I'd too would be concerned if an official threw one of those at a player!

Lesley. A 'flag' in American Football is a brightly coloUred cloth, thrown down by an official to mark the place where an offence has been deemed to have occured.

Years later, I'm still surprised the Pansy Brigade hasn't tried to get throwing flags outlawed because of this one incident.

As opposed to being inarticule. Ol' Lesley probly knows dat a flag in da old FA, ain't da same ting in da NFL. She know how to do reserch. What? Don't lambast me please for being so American in my articulations. When one gets hit in the eye by accident with a penalty flag, there is know high drama like the drama we see in FA with all the grasping of the shin in *pain*, by gads.

Is that a Hunter on your avatar Martin? Love the lines on that pretty thing.

Referee flags in the NFL also have a small bean bag pouch attached to weight them down, so they don't fly all over the field.

I do remember at least one instance in the NFL of a referee's flag getting lodged inside a players face mask and hitting him in the eye.

@Boxjaw. Yes it is a Hunter. I'm having a competition with a team mate. I put up different aircraft for my avatar to see if they can identify it correctly. They usually can. :)

I had that as my avatar last month. That was followed by the Hawk when the Red Arrow crash happened. :( (We'd had the pleasure of seeing them perform just one week before.)

Had the pleasure of seeing the Red Arrows many years ago, fantastic display.
Also saw the American display team, The Thunderbirds' here, about three years ago. They do their display choreographed to music. Massive speakers everywhere. Awesome. How they do that, I do not know, but if you haven't seen them and get the chance, don't miss it.

Absolutely agree with callie_ross. Nothing wrong with a little sarcasm. Both Lesley and Boxjaw made, what I thought, were witty and amusing posts.

I'm glad you picked up on it Boxjaw. It's something I started doing a while ago, trying to preserve the English way of spelling words. Just my sense of humoUr I guess. :)

Oh dear - I almost didn't bother looking at this thread - I made a perfectly simple, straightforward post, agreeing that 40 is much too young, and then attempting to write something constructive, even though I have never heard of this man. I was also horrified at the thought of a flag, which I interpreted as cloth with stick attached, being thrown around by supposedly responsible adults.

Where was the sarcasm? In the eye of the beholder, of course.

Thank you to good people for support, and also to clever people who described "flag" in this context. Ouch.

I'll be in my room.
